Notre Dame's Devon Kane picks Villanova
The 5-foot-7 junior point guard has been a first-team selection in the Inter-Ac League.
"She's very athletic, has a lot of speed," Irish coach Mary Beth McNichol said. "That will really help her against Big East competition."
Kane sat out almost all of last season with a torn knee ligament. She returned to the court with just six games to play.
As a sophomore, Kane averaged 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals per game. She was a first-team all-Inter-Ac League selection.
Rutgers gets two more. Duron Harmon, a 6-1, 190-pound safety from Caesar Rodney High School in Wyoming, Del., and Robert Joseph, a 6-1, 225-pound running back from Poly Prep in Brooklyn, N.Y., orally committed for football.
Murray narrows choices. There's a chance that Aaric Murray will play college basketball in Philadelphia.
A senior next season at Glen Mills, he has narrowed his college choices to West Virginia, Villanova, Temple, La Salle and St. Joseph's.
"I wouldn't say [it is] a front-runner, but West Virginia has my attention right now," Murray said yesterday at the NBA Players' Association's Top 100 camp at the University of Virginia.
The North Philadelphia native, a 6-10, 256-pounder, is the nation's 41st-ranked prospect in the Class of 2009, according to Scout.com. Murray, who averaged 19 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks last season, is ranked second in The Inquirer's Nifty Fifty top local players.
New Norristown coach. Ashlee Harrison is the school's new girls' basketball coach. Harrison, a former player at Wissahickon and Gwynedd-Mercy College, was most recently an assistant at Wissahickon.
Hagan chosen at Gloucester. Vin Hagan has been named the new boys' basketball coach, replacing Tom Torrillo, who resigned after the season.
Hagan is a 1998 graduate of Gloucester, where he played football and basketball. He played for Torrillo at Gloucester and most recently served as the freshman basketball coach, in addition to being a varsity football assistant. Assisting Hagan will be Kevin Fahy.
Torrillo had been the head coach of Gloucester for 12 years.
Collins resigns. Sean Collins has resigned as boys' basketball coach at Apex Academy, the athletic program affiliated with the Living Faith Christian School in Pennsauken. Collins spent one year at Apex Academy, which fielded three postgraduate teams as well as serving as a training program for the varsity and junior-varsity teams at Living Faith Christian.
Collins, who teaches physical education at Schalick, plans to pursue his master's degree and also hopes to return to "more traditional" high school coaching. He is an assistant football coach at Schalick.
