Pa. Girls: Haverford High tops Upper Darby to win league title

The Central League softball race went down to the wire and Haverford High won the title with a lean at the tape last night.

Michele Patten pitched a two-hitter as the Fords (17-3 overall, 16-2 league) clinched with a 5-1 win at Upper Darby.

The two teams went into the last regular-season game tied for first with 15-2 league records.

Marcella Carozza's sixth-inning single tied the game and Catherine McGowan's triple later in the inning drove in a pair of insurance runs.

Catholic South. Host Hallahan rode Ashley Harley's 4-for-4 day at the plate to an 11-7 win over visiting Archbishop Carroll, clinching the school's first playoff berth in eight years.

Inter-Ac. Erica Koplove gave host Penn Charter its second complete game in as many days in a 5-2 win over Springside. Koplove did not give up an extra-base hit in the game, following a similar performance from teammate Liz Carpino, who pitched a complete game in a 1-0 win at Notre Dame on Tuesday.

Ches-Mont. Theresa Huber's two-out triple in the 10th inning gave Octorara a 2-0 win at Oxford, making a winner out of pitcher Stephanie Pritchard, who gave up eight hits.

Nonleague. Caroline Miller kept the lead from the first inning on for host Harriton in a 1-0 win over Strath Haven. Miller watched in the first inning as Jen Krain's sacrifice fly scored Leah Dworkin and she followed that with six more outstanding innings, giving up two hits and striking out 12.

Courtney Spina allowed just one hit for host Garnet Valley in a 1-0 win over Kennett.

Meghan Walsh's eighth-inning single scored Lauren Ricapito with the winning run in Upper Perkiomen's 1-0 win at Pennridge.

Council Rock North needed 12 innings to earn a 4-0 win at Neshaminy as Kelsey Krisch pitched all 12 innings and gave up just five hits.
