Sun Valley golfer can drive a baseball, too
Senior Pat Sheridan would like to wield a bat for Shippensburg next year as a walk-on.
Pat Sheridan's goal is to be a walk-on baseball player at Shippensburg. If that does not work out, he could try a fallback college career as a golfer.
Sheridan, a senior at Sun Valley, competed at the No. 1 position for the school's golf team last fall. He averaged a score of 45 for nine holes. "I've been playing golf my entire life," he said.
An 18-year-old from Brookhaven, Sheridan regularly plays at Town and Country Golf Links in Woodstown, N.J. His uncle, Gene Fieger, is a teaching professional in Naples, Fla. Last year, he placed second in the 23d annual South Florida PGA Open with a three-round score of 208.
In baseball, Sheridan has been a major contributor as a rightfielder and pitcher for Sun Valley. Before yesterday's scheduled Del-Val League game at Chester, he was batting .475 (19 for 40) with a .775 slugging percentage and 18 RBIs.
Sheridan is hitting from the No. 6 slot in the order. "I like hitting there," he said. "I get a lot of opportunities to drive home runs."
The Vanguards are ranked No. 6 in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer. Through Wednesday, they were 15-1 overall and 12-0 in the Del-Val. Their only loss was to Penncrest.
"We have a lot of experience, pretty good pitching and strong hitting," said Sheridan, who belted home runs in wins against Garnet Valley and Penn Wood.
As a pitcher, the 5-foot-8, 160-pounder was 3-0 with a 1.17 ERA. In 12 innings, he had fanned 18 batters, allowed four hits and walked seven. "For his size, he has a strong arm," Sun Valley coach Kraig Kaufhold said.
The other leaders for the Vanguards are junior second baseman Sam Farnell (.400 batting average, 19 runs, 18 RBIs), senior outfielder Bob Westbrook (.434 batting average, .524 on-base percentage, 20 runs), and senior catcher Joe Maloney (.349 batting average, 14 runs, 12 RBIs).
Ed Toy is a dual threat as a first baseman and pitcher. The senior was hitting .372 with 13 RBIs and 16 runs. On the mound, he was 3-1 with a 2.19 ERA and 20 strikeouts.
At Shippensburg, Sheridan plans to major in business. "I've been talking to their coach [Matt Jones]," he said. "He's been checking up on me, keeping an eye on my stats."
