S. Jersey Boys: Maple Shade hangs on for a 10-9 victory

Maple Shade watched a 9-2 lead disappear, but the Wildcats still managed to take another step toward the Burlington County League Freedom Division baseball title with a 10-9 win over visiting Palmyra yesterday.

Palmyra rallied to tie the game with a six-run sixth inning, but Maple Shade ended the game in the bottom of the seventh when Connor Anderson walked, stole second, advanced on an error, and scored on Kevin Bowman's hit.

The Wildcats have a two-game lead in the Freedom with three to play.

Also in Burlington County, Moorestown gave coach Bill Donoghue his 150th career win, 6-1, over visiting Bordentown. Taylor Burke and Dan Beam drove in two runs each in support of Kyle Fetchko's complete-game pitching.

Colonial. Rich Leadbeater went 3 for 3 with a double, three RBIs, and three runs scored as Haddon Heights (9-7) clinched an NJSIAA playoff berth with a 10-5 win over visiting Sterling.

Olympic. Dan McGuckin's 100th career hit highlighted Winslow Township's 10-5 win at Eastern.

Cherokee used home runs from Shane Lynch, Chris Carlantonio and Alec Bernstein to fuel an 8-7 success against visiting Bishop Eustace.

Cape-Atlantic. Home runs off the bats of Eric Halbruner, Ryan Samaniego and Justine Downes powered Lower Cape May's 9-6 triumph over visiting Vineland.

Brett Caprio's third RBI of the game supplied the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as Mainland clipped visiting Atlantic City, 3-2.

Absegami's Frank Vitrano homered, poked a game-winning two-out, two-run single in the sixth, and pitched the seventh for a save to beat visiting Oakcrest, 5-4.

Nonleague. Joe Miller's 10 strikeouts combined with Robby Sheppard's three hits and two runs scored to steer Cherry Hill East (8-7) to a 7-0 win over visiting Medford Tech and an NJSIAA tournament berth.

Track and Field

Absegami's 4x400-meter relay team of Santiago Galeano, Demetrius Rooks, Ford Palmer and Geoff Navarro set a meet record of 3 minutes, 18.7 seconds at the Atlantic County championships at Buena.

Navarro also won the 100 (10.5) and 400 (48.2) dashes, and Palmer took gold medals in the 800 (1:57.4) and 1,600 (4:27.7).

Cumberland County. Jamal Boozer won the 200 (22.0) and 400 (49.7) dashes, and anchored the winning 4x400 relay (3:24.4), sparking Vineland to the team championship at Bridgeton.

Tennis

After having its entire varsity lineup graduate last spring, Sterling skipped the rebuilding process and put together a 12-6 season, including a 3-2 win over visiting Cinnaminson in the first round of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 2 playoffs.

Taylor McGrory clinched the Silver Knights' win at third singles with a 7-6 (7-5), 7-6, (7-4) marathon over Sean Joyce. Sterling also got wins from Dan Pfafman at second singles, and Chris Clark and Dave Roberts at second doubles.

South Jersey Group 3. Matt Rammel needed a 9-7 tiebreaker to wrap up a 6-4, 7-6 win at second singles and help Cumberland (16-3) get past visiting Ocean City, 4-1, in the first round.

South Jersey Group 4. The Lenape doubles teams of Bill Blatchley and Jon Porco, and Brian Chang and Greg Serba combined to lose just two games in sweeping their matches in straight sets as the Indians ousted visiting Pennsauken, 4-1.
