Rams' Calzonetti picks Dominican for basketball
Gloucester Catholic senior Mike Calzonetti has accepted a scholarship to play basketball at Division II Dominican College in Orangeburg, N.Y.
"We won three Christmas tournaments and back-to-back division titles, all on Michael's shoulders," Gloucester Catholic coach Pat Murphy said last night.
A 6-foot-4 forward, Calzonetti averaged 17.1 points per game last season and was a third-team Inquirer all-South Jersey selection. He was a four-year varsity player and a three-year starter.
"He actually had a tryout at Dominican," Murphy said. "That's how they do it on the Division II level."
Murphy said Calzonetti liked Dominican's proximity and the fact that it will play area schools such as the University of the Sciences and Philadelphia University. "His family will get a chance to watch him play," Murphy said, adding that Calzonetti will receive a partial scholarship as a freshman and a full scholarship for the next three years.
Dominican's roster includes 6-5 Tim Matchett, a former Pitman standout. As a Dominican freshman last season, Matchett averaged 6.4 points per game for the 13-15 Chargers.
