Sports in Brief: Owls to open hoops season vs. Kansas
Temple will open the 2008-09 men's basketball season against defending NCAA champion Kansas in the Jayhawks' Allen Fieldhouse on Dec. 20.
The two teams will open the 2009-10 season at the Wachovia Center.
The Owls, who were 21-13 this past season, return nine letter-winners from their Atlantic Ten Conference championship squad.
Alabama State basketball player Deshean Porchea collapsed and died after playing in a pickup game on the campus in Birmingham.
A university spokeswoman said an autopsy was being performed on the 19-year-old guard from McDonough, Ga.
B.J. Monteiro, a 6-foot-5 swingman chosen as the Connecticut high school player of the year, signed a binding letter of intent with Duquesne. He also had considered Nevada-Las Vegas, St. Joseph's, Penn State and Fordham.
Point guard Terrell Holloway, who had planned to attend Indiana, signed with Xavier. Holloway, a Cincinnati native, was one of Indiana's top recruits. He changed his mind after coach Kelvin Sampson resigned in February.
Elsewhere: Missouri starters DeMarre Carroll and Leo Lyons declared for the NBA draft, though neither will hire an agent and they could return to school. . . . Alabama-Birmingham men's basketball coach Mike Davis received a two-year contract extension and a $25,000 raise. . . . Virginia Commonwealth and men's basketball coach Anthony Grant agreed in principle to a contract extension that will keep him at the school through the 2013-14 season. . . . Tyler Smith, a 6-foot-7 forward, said he will return to Tennessee for his junior season. . . . UNLV hired Kathy Olivier, former UCLA coach and Rebels player, as its women's basketball coach.
Bayern Munich was held to a 1-1 tie at home by Zenit St. Petersburg, and the Glasgow Rangers battled to a 0-0 draw with Fiorentina in the opening legs of the UEFA Cup.
The UEFA Cup final is set for May 14 at the City of Manchester Stadium.
A day earlier, Manchester United tied Barcelona, 0-0, in the Champions League semifinals. In the other Champions semifinal, Chelsea scored in the fifth minute of injury time for a 1-1 tie at Liverpool.
Elsewhere: England's bid to host the 2018 World Cup was approved by the Football Association in London.
After reports that Tony Stewart would sign with another NASCAR team next season, Joe Gibbs Racing's president, J.D. Gibbs, said the team intends to hold Stewart to his contract, which runs through 2009.
Kentucky Derby favorite Big Brown, now working out at the Palm Meadows training center in Boynton Beach, Fla., will be shipped by plane Monday to Louisville, Ky.
