48 lacrosse squads to square off in Samson Festival

Forty-eight girls' and boys' lacrosse teams, 15 of them rated in laxpower.com's Eastern Pennsylvania top 10, will be in action Saturday at the eighth annual Katie Samson Lacrosse Festival at Radnor High School.

The festival is one of the largest single-day high school lacrosse events in the country. The games will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Samson, a standout player for Radnor before her graduation in 1998, suffered a spinal cord injury in a January 2000 sledding accident that left her paralyzed from the chest down. Proceeds from the festival are used to fund spinal- cord-injury research and help provide care for patients with such injuries. More than $750,000 has been raised over the years.

One of the top boys' games, scheduled for 11:30 a.m., will pit La Salle, rated No. 1 by LaxPower, against No. 3 Ridley. The defending Catholic League champion Explorers won 18 of their first 19 games. Ridley was 12-1 after a 20-3 Central League win over Marple Newtown on Tuesday.

Malvern Prep, ranked No. 2, will face No. 13 Abington at 1:30 p.m., while No. 4 Haverford School will take on defending Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association champion Downingtown East, the No. 9 team, at 1:30 p.m.

Other top 10-rated teams in action will be No. 5 Conestoga, No. 8 Penn Charter, and No. 10 Central Bucks East.

On the girls' side, Radnor's powerful scoring machine, rated No. 1 by laxpower.com, will square off against No. 29 Germantown Academy at 11:30 a.m. The Red Raiders outscored the opposition, 200-48, in their first 10 games.

Other top-10 rated girls' teams in action at the festival will include No. 2 Abington, No. 3 Great Valley, No. 6 Springfield (Delaware County), No. 7 Episcopal Academy, No. 9 Downingtown East, and No. 10 Strath Haven.
