EA goalkeeper Powers commits to N. Carolina
Episcopal Academy junior goalkeeper Caitlin Powers has signed a letter of intent to play field hockey for North Carolina starting in 2009.
Powers, a Villanova resident, is also the goalie for the Churchmen's highly rated girls' lacrosse team. The lacrosse team (12-4) is rated No. 13 in eastern Pennsylvania by laxpower.com. The Churchmen are the two-time defending Inter-Academic League champions.
Powers has been the field hockey team's starting goalie since she was a freshman. She has also been playing goalie for her Mystx club team since 2005. Last summer, she played for Central Coast, a team in Australia.
"The college coaches seem to like her . . . ability to cover the corners very well," said Tina Reinprecht, coach of the Mystx. "She's a hard worker, and she's good on her feet."
Although Powers, who plans to study business at UNC, played field hockey in middle school, she didn't take up lacrosse until ninth grade.
Last hockey season, she had 11 shutouts as the Churchmen posted a 16-4 record.
