Irish's Weis can accept if he's fired

Charlie Weis said even he wouldn't blame Notre Dame for firing him as head coach.

"If they decide to make a change, I'd have a tough time arguing that, because 6-5 is not good enough," Weis said yesterday. "Especially when you've lost five games by a touchdown or less and several three-point games that went right down to the wire.

"My intent is to be here. But if that were the rationale, I mean, it would be tough for me to argue with that point."

Notre Dame (6-5) lost its third straight game Saturday, falling, 33-30, in double overtime to Connecticut on senior day in South Bend, Ind.

Weis' 35-26 record gives him a .574 winning percentage, worse than the .583 that got Notre Dame's two previous coaches, Tyrone Willingham and Bob Davie, fired.

Athletic director Jack Swarbrick has said he will decide Weis' future after Saturday's game at Stanford (7-4).

Weis, whose contract runs through the 2015 season, said he could not envision any scenario in which he would resign.

Princeton fires coach. The Tigers dismissed head coach Roger Hughes after 10 seasons, athletic director Gary Walters said. Hughes was 47-52 at Princeton, winning the 2006 Ivy League title and posting three winning seasons overall.

The Tigers finished 4-6 this season.

Ole Miss surges. Mississippi, California, and North Carolina, teams that started the season with lofty expectations before stumbling, have surged back into the top 25 in the Associated Press college football poll.

No. 1 Florida was followed by fellow unbeatens Alabama, Texas, Texas Christian, Cincinnati, and Boise State.

The only change in the top 10 came at No. 10. Oregon moved up a spot after Louisiana State slipped seven places to No. 17 after losing, 25-23, at Ole Miss.

Mississippi is No. 20, Cal No. 21, and North Carolina No. 23.

Penn State is No. 12.

Just kidding. After further review, Jacory Harris wore a sling after the game merely for comic effect.

Miami's quarterback appeared for his interview after Saturday's 34-16 win over Duke with his right arm in a sling. He has a thumb injury on that hand, the exact severity of which has not been announced, and played against Duke with his throwing hand wrapped in tape.

But when Harris left the room, he ripped off the sling. Turns out the quarterback was "getting some of you guys," Miami coach Randy Shannon told reporters.

Pac-10 scramble. The Pacific Ten race is down to two.

When No. 10 Oregon and No. 16 Oregon State meet Dec. 3, a Rose Bowl berth will be on the line for both schools - a first in a bitter rivalry that started in 1894.

"This is crazy," Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli said after running for three touchdowns and throwing for three more in a 44-41 double-overtime victory over Arizona on Saturday night.

Oregon State eliminated Southern Cal from the race by posting a 42-10 rout of Washington State in Pullman, Wash. California knocked Stanford out with a 34-28 road win.

"One hundred guys have banded together for one purpose, winning the upcoming ball game," said Oregon State linebacker Keaton Kristick.
