Sports in Brief: Soccer goalie Enke killed by train in Germany

Robert Enke, a 32-year-old goalkeeper expected to play for Germany in next year's World Cup, died in Frankfurt last night after being hit by a train in what police suspect is a suicide.

U.S. national team forward Charlie Davies, 23, was released from a Washington hospital after undergoing several surgeries. He was riding in a car on Oct. 13 that crashed and killed a 22-year-old passenger.

Davies's long recovery time will cause him to miss the World Cup, which opens in South Africa in June.

Cristiano Ronaldo will miss both legs of Portugal's World Cup playoff against Bosnia-Herzegovina. Team doctors ruled that his right ankle is still injured.

Major League Soccer named Seattle Sounders forward Fredy Montero the 2009 MLS newcomer of the year.

Argentina coach Diego Maradona will attend a disciplinary hearing Sunday at FIFA headquarters into his expletive-filled outburst following his team's qualification for the World Cup on Oct. 14.

The Kixx solidified their back line for the indoor soccer season, re-signing defenders Joe Di Buono, Clay Roberts, and Kevin Coleman, while adding defender Will Kletzien from Chicago. Terms were not disclosed.

SWIMMING: Michael Phelps, who won a record eight gold medals in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, finished third in the 100-meter medley at a World Cup short-course meet after missing out on two other finals in Stockholm, Sweden.

Earlier, Phelps failed to qualify for the finals of the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, in which he was disqualified for swimming too long under water.

Kaio Almeida of Brazil broke the world record for the men's 200-meter butterfly at a short-course World Cup meet. His 1-minute, 49.11-second time beat the 1:50.53 set by Russian Nikolay Skvortsov in February.

COLLEGES: Drexel (8-3) received an at-large bid and first-ever spot in the NCAA Division I field hockey tournament and will meet Big East champion Connecticut on Saturday in College Park, Md. It's the first at-large bid for Drexel in any NCAA Division I tournament sport.

Elsewhere. Seton Hall men's basketball player Keon Lawrence was suspended indefinitely from the team after police said he was under the influence when he drove the wrong way on the Garden State Parkway and collided with another car near Sayreville, N.J., early Monday. . . . The NCAA said Jeff Jordan, the oldest son of Michael Jordan, will miss the first two games of the season for No. 23 Illinois after playing in an unsanctioned event last summer.

TENNIS: Former No. 1 Marat Safin, who will retire this month, said Andre Agassi should give his tennis titles back after admitting that he tested positive for a banned substance during his career and lied about it to the ATP.

BOXING: Middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (35-1, 31 knockouts) will defend his WBC and WBO titles in his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio, on Dec. 19 against Miguel Espino, (20-2-1, 9 KOs) in Pavlik's first fight since February.

GOLF: Cristie Kerr's 4-under-par 32 on the back nine led the LPGA to victory in the Wendy's 3-Tour Challenge in Henderson, Nev., at Reo Secco. The event has three-person teams from the PGA Tour, Champions Tour, and LPGA. Kerr's teammates were Suzann Pettersen and Natalie Gulbis. They beat the PGA's Stewart Cink, Fred Couples, and Bubba Watson by 2 strokes to win $300,000.

Nick Faldo was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for a career in which he won six majors and captained Europe's Ryder Cup team.
