Phillies decline option on Feliz

Pedro Feliz has played his last game for the Phillies.

Or maybe he hasn't.

The team announced last night that it had declined the third baseman's $5.5 million contract option for 2010. Feliz, who becomes a free agent, will be paid a $500,000 buyout.

With the move, the Phillies will look for an alternative at third base. It the team does not find one, it can re-sign Feliz to a new contract, probably for less than the $5.5 million he would have been guaranteed had the Phils exercised his option.

"This doesn't preclude us from bringing Pedro back," general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "While this allows us to explore other opportunities, we will keep the lines of communication open with Pedro and his representative."

Amaro and his assistants will travel to the general managers meetings today in Chicago. Finding a third baseman now becomes one of the team's priorities. Several are on the free-agent market, including Chone Figgins, Adrian Beltre, and Mark DeRosa.

The Phils could also have interest in free agent Miguel Tejada, a longtime shortstop who is open to playing third base.

Second baseman Placido Polanco is another free agent who could find his way to third. The Phils explored the idea of trading for Tejada and moving him to third several years ago, but he was not open to changing positions at the time. Polanco played some third base for the Phils from 2002 to '05 before being traded to Detroit.

Amaro indicated last night that he had already covered some ground in his search for a third baseman.

"We've already had a couple of teams approach us about trades involving third basemen," he said.

Feliz, 34, played two seasons with the Phillies. He came to Philadelphia with the reputation of being an outstanding defender with some pop in his bat. He upheld his defensive reputation - in fact, he was superb with the glove - but showed only occasional power, with 26 homers in two seasons. Before coming to Philadelphia, he had four straight seasons of at least 20 homers with the San Francisco Giants.

Overall, Feliz hit .259 with a dreadful .306 on-base percentage in two seasons with the Phils.

He hit just .167 in the postseason this year, but he did tie Game 4 of the World Series with an eighth-inning home run. The Phillies ended up losing when the Yankees scored three runs in the ninth.

Feliz was a postseason hero in 2008. He drove in what proved to be the winning run in the Phils' clinching Game 5 win over Tampa Bay in the World Series.

Really respect Pedro Feliz but I also believe we need greater OBP throughout the lineup.

Given the lack of .300 hitters on the team, they need to upgrade at 3rd base. They need someone who can hit for a good average and not strike out a lot.

Obviously, he was signed because of those 20-homer seasons in SF. Love the glove, but he's fallen short of the expectations and I think an upgrade is necessary. We can get a good glove AND someone who hits.

No thanks to Tejada or Polanco. Both are Type A free agents. Are you going to call Rollins' OBP dreadful as well? Because it was lower than Feliz's and he is STILL in the leadoff spot. I want Chone Figgins for 3rd and to bat lead off. Drop Jimmy to 7th in the lineup and this team will score a lot more runs.

Feliz was very good in the field...but sparse hitting and a little slow on the basepaths...his HRs were way down....all of which spells see ya later.....to compete at the highest level we have to be getting production from everyone...I like him as a utility guy and as a right side hitter off the bench...or as a defensive move in late innings.

I'm guessing Feliz comes back at $3-4 million. I don't like the other options available, I can live with a repeat of Feliz's 2009.

This is a bad move. He had the glove, but no the bat. Not all batters on team are gonna be sluggers. Given the list of players mentioned here, there is no upgrade. When you best idea is to sign a player and change his position, you might be over thinking the answer.

Great fielder, but need more pop from third base

Because we've been so productive at 2B & SS the last two years, I think people have lost sight of the fact that 1B & 3B are where teams traditionally get the most offensive production from their infield. Pedro is a great guy and an excellent fielder but, come on, if you are honestly convinced that he's the best option available... you're kidding yourself.

I like Figgins even though he was worse in the playoffs than Feliz. 1 for 20 something !?!? Pathethic!! But he had a good regular season and steals lots of bases. He would be an upgrade over J-Roll in the leadoff spot. Its time for Jimmy to hit 2nd or further down the line-up.

Before heading south to the rest home in Florida, old Cholly told Rube he'd "like to see Eric Bruntlett get a shot at the 3rd base opening". Something about a "hunch" and 47 years of "feel for the game"
