Irish eyes are angry as Weis defends team
Those words may prove prophetic.
That record is the best the Fighting Irish (6-3) can finish the regular season with after their stunning 23-21 loss to Navy on Saturday, and critics of Weis, who has six years left on his 10-year contract, are out in full throat.
Fan message boards are rife with those calling for his firing.
Until the loss, the Irish were aiming for a Bowl Championship Series berth. Now the best they can hope for is the Gator or Cotton Bowl, and they still have games at eighth-ranked Pittsburgh and at 25th-ranked Stanford sandwiched around a game at home against Connecticut.
Weis was asked how the Irish, who have a star quarterback in Jimmy Clausen and two standout receivers, could fail to make it to a BCS game.
"Is the glass half full or is the glass half empty?" Weis asked rhetorically. "We lost three games by 13 points. But there are a lot of close wins that could have gone the other way for us, too.
"I think we have some dynamic players on our team, but it still comes down to situational football. You still have to excel in situational football."
The rankings. Oklahoma dropped out of the Associated Press poll for the first time since 2005, and Stanford moved into the rankings for the first time since 2001.
The first six spots were held by major college football's six unbeaten teams, with Florida, Texas, and Alabama making up the top three for the second consecutive week.
Texas Christian moved up two spots, to No. 4, bumping fifth-ranked Cincinnati and sixth-ranked Boise State back a spot.
Oklahoma had stayed in the rankings this season while losing three close games without star quarterback Sam Bradford, but Saturday's 10-3 loss at Nebraska dropped the Sooners to 5-4 and out of the media poll.
Stanford moved into the rankings after knocking off Oregon, 51-42, to become bowl-eligible.
Knocked out. California's star tailback, Jahvid Best, was released from a hospital and will miss at least one game after suffering a concussion.
Best spent the night at Highland General Hospital in Oakland, Calif., for observation and tests after landing on the back of his head in the end zone and being briefly knocked unconscious in a 31-14 loss to Oregon State on Saturday night.
Seminole sidelined. Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder has a separated right shoulder and will miss the game against Wake Forest on Saturday.
