Sports in Brief: Contender is snared in cocaine roundup
Junior-welterweight contender Edgar "El Chamaco" Santana was among 12 people from the Bronx, Brooklyn, Yonkers, Manhattan and Puerto Rico arrested yesterday in New York on charges of taking part in an international cocaine trafficking ring.
Prosecutors said Santana, 29, conspired with the other suspects to smuggle cocaine from Puerto Rico into New York. Narcotics detectives arrested the suspects early yesterday. They seized several pounds of cocaine and $450,000 in cash as part of the investigation, dubbed "Operation Special Delivery."
The suspects are from Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Yonkers and Puerto Rico. Prosecutors said all were charged with counts related to sale and possession of cocaine. Their arraignment was postponed until Monday, and it was unclear whether they had attorneys.
The next fight for Santana (24-3, 15 knockouts) was to be Aug. 6 against Ali Oubaali (21-3, 17 KOs). Santana could not be reached for comment.
A doctor in San Antonio, Texas, who performed brain surgery on a boxer who collapsed during a fight Wednesday says he expects the 25-year-old to survive.
Welterweight boxer Oscar Diaz remained in critical but stable condition, according to David Jimenez. He is still in a coma, attributed to the severe brain injury.
Diaz collapsed before the 11th round of the televised USBA welterweight championship fight against Delvin Rodriguez and was rushed to a hospital, where Jimenez performed surgery to remove a piece of his skull to relieve brain swelling.
The Buffalo Sabres locked up their franchise goalie, Ryan Miller, with a five-year, $31.25 million extension, ending speculation that he might be gone after this season and the end of his contract.
Miller, who turned 28 on Thursday, will make $6.25 million each year through the 2013-14 season.
Nashville Predators forward Alex Radulov was one of six players whose new contracts were suspended by the International Ice Hockey Federation until the legality of the deals could be investigated.
Radulov, under contract for another season with the Predators, signed a contract with a Russian team in the new Continental Hockey League (KHL).
The IIHF told the NHL, the NHLPA and the KHL that the international transfers of Radulov and five others are officially under investigation.
The deals for Nikita Filatov, Viktor Tikhonov, Jason Krog, Tomas Mojzis and Fedor Fedorov also are being reviewed.
