NFL: Cowboys decline Claiborne's option

The Dallas Cowboys are not picking up the fifth-year option of Morris Claiborne's rookie contract, making the injury-plagued cornerback eligible for free agency after this season.

The Dallas Cowboys are not picking up the fifth-year option of Morris Claiborne's rookie contract, making the injury-plagued cornerback eligible for free agency after this season.

The sixth pick in the 2012 draft will not participate in offseason workouts and likely won't be ready for the start of training camp because of the torn patellar tendon in his left knee that kept him out of 12 games last season.

Dallas used its first-round pick on cornerback Byron Jones.

Collins questioned. Former LSU offensive lineman La'el Collins was interviewed by police about the shooting death of Brittney Mills, 29, his pregnant ex-girlfriend, in Baton Rouge, La.

Collins, an all-SEC lineman who was not selected in the NFL draft, is not a person of interest in the investigation, police said. He met with Bills coach Rex Ryan late Monday night.

"It went fine; we answered all their questions," Collins' attorney, Jim Boren, told reporters.

Elsewhere. The Vikings exercised the fifth-year options on the contracts for safety Harrison Smith and left tackle Matt Kalil, keeping them with the team through 2016. . . . The Jets fired director of pro personnel Brendan Prophett and five members of the scouting department.
