Burress says he'd be happy with Eagles

Plaxico Burress told ESPN-FM 97.5 on Tuesday that "nothing else would make me happier" than to play for the Eagles.

The New York Jets receiver, who is set to become a free agent on March 13, echoed statements that he made several times last offseason when he was unemployed, out of prison and looking for a job. Despite that campaign - and the lobbying of his friend, quarterback Michael Vick - the Eagles chose not to sign Burress.

He said there was a "a lot of interest" from the Eagles last July, but apparently they didn't believe he was worth the $3 million the Jets eventually shelled out in a one-year deal.

Burress finished with 45 catches for 612 yards and eight touchdowns, including seven from in the red zone, for the Jets.

The Eagles have lacked big receivers in recent years. The 6-foot-5, 232-pound Burress would certainly give the offense some size inside the 20. The Eagles were a respectable 14th in the NFL in the red zone last season, converting 34 of 66 possessions into touchdowns. But their receivers accounted for only nine of 17 passing touchdowns.

Burress will turn 35 in August, though, and would strictly be signed as a situational receiver with Jeremy Maclin back, DeSean Jackson likely back and Jason Avant a sure-handed third receiver.

"Obviously, coming to Philadelphia and instituting myself to the offense it just adds a unique dynamic to what's already in place," said Burress.

Burress, who grew up in the same area of Virginia as Vick, said that he talks with the Eagles quarterback once or twice a week.

"I really believe he can bring a championship to Philadelphia, and I would love to be a part of it," Burress said of Vick.

Burress said that the Jets left the door open as far as a possible return. There aren't expected to be many suitors, and Burress may have to settle for less than the $3 million he made last season.
