Goodell said to plan new head-injury rule
Goodell will issue a memo this week to all 32 teams expanding grounds for the removal of a player with a head injury or concussion, Fox Sports reported yesterday.
Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger and Arizona's Kurt Warner missed starts yesterday because of head injuries suffered a week ago.
Yesterday's report said that Goodell wants a player barred from returning to a game if the player is "woozy, has general dementia or memory loss."
Currently, a player can return to the game after being diagnosed with a concussion if he is asymptomatic at rest and under exertion, and is cleared by the team doctor. The lone exception is if the medical staff determines the player lost consciousness, in which case he is ruled out for the rest of the game.
The league would not comment on the Fox report.
The Associated Press this month conducted a survey of 160 NFL players, and 30 replied that they have hidden or played down the effects of a concussion.
Tomlinson in top 10. San Diego's LaDainian Tomlinson has passed Marcus Allen and Edgerrin James to take over 10th place on the NFL's all-time rushing list.
Tomlinson came into yesterday's game against Kansas City with 12,218 career yards, good for 12th.
He passed Allen (12,243 yards) on a 5-yard run in the first quarter, then passed James (12,246) on an 8-yard run in the second quarter, giving him 12,254 yards.
Up next is Marshall Faulk in ninth with 12,279 yards.
The Chargers won, 43-14, but the news wasn't all rosy: They lost linebacker Shawne Merriman (foot) and safety Eric Weddle (knee) to injuries.
Colts' curse. Houston quarterback Matt Schaub is finding out firsthand about the dark cloud that hangs over his club when the Texans play the Indianapolis Colts.
Despite holding a 13-point lead at halftime, the Texans allowed the Colts to rally for three touchdowns in the fourth quarter and escape Houston with a 35-27 win - the 15th victory for the Colts in 16 games against the Texans.
In the fourth quarter, Schaub - a product of West Chester East High - threw an interception that Clint Session returned 27 yards for a touchdown, and then fumbled on Houston's next possession to set up the final Colts score.
Rose Bowl rematch. The Cardinals' Matt Leinart had a solid day substituting for the injured Warner, completing 21 of 31 passes for 220 yards against Tennessee. But the Titans still won, 20-17, behind Vince Young.
It was Young, of course, who led Texas to a legendary Rose Bowl national-title win over Leinart and Southern Cal in January 2006.
"I thought Vince played great," Leinart said. "He made plays in that last series, so hats off to him. I thought our defense played phenomenally; he just made some plays."
Manning's trouble. The New York Giants' Eli Manning has developed a stress reaction in his right foot that could lead to further injuries that might sideline him indefinitely, a person familiar with Manning's injury told the Associated Press.
