College Basketball: Connecticut overwhelms LSU
Gavin Edwards added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Huskies, who advanced to play No. 7 Duke or Arizona State for the title tomorrow. Stanley Robinson had 14 points and 11 rebounds.
UConn (4-0) had been underwhelming during its first three games this season, even trailing Hofstra by nine late in the second half in the tournament quarterfinals. But the Huskies were simply overwhelming vs the Tigers (3-1).
"Getting beat by a team like that really exposes you," LSU coach Trent Johnson said.
Connecticut held Tasmin Mitchell to nine points and Bo Simpson to five. The Tigers' leading scorer, Simpson briefly left the game with about 15 minutes remaining after hurting his right ankle.
Kansas 89, Oakland (Mich.) 59 - The No. 1 Jayhawks (4-0) extended their home winning streak to 44 with a rout of the Golden Grizzlies (2-3).
Twins Marcus and Markieff Morris out of Prep Charter combined for 27 points - 19 by Marcus.
Wisconsin 78, Maryland 69 - The Badgers (4-1) hit 10 three-pointers to upend the No. 21 Terps (4-2) in the third-place game of the Maui Invitational in Hawaii.
Jason Bohannon scored 20 points to lead Wisconsin.
Vanderbilt 84, Arizona 72 - A.J. Ogilvy scored 20 points and collected seven rebounds to lead the No. 24 Commodores (4-1) over the Wildcats (3-2) in the fifth-place game of the Maui Invitational.
Arizona's Nic Wise was held to nine points.
Penn State 87, Sacred Heart 75 - David Jackson scored 26 points to lead the Nittany Lions (4-2) over the Pioneers (2-3) at home in State College.
Talor Battle added 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Nittany Lions.
Elsewhere: After missing four games with a foot injury, Levittown's Tyrone Lewis had 18 points as Niagara took care of Mount St. Mary's, 74-64. . . . Lehigh used a 10-0 spurt in the second half to hold off host St. Francis, 76-67, in Loretto, Pa. . . . John Holland scored four points in the final six seconds of overtime as Boston University beat Northeastern, 69-64, in Boston. . . . Darryl Crawford scored 26 points to lead Manhattan to a 69-62 win over American in Washington.
Jarrid Famous contributed 16 points as South Florida posted a 76-54 win over Kent State in Tampa. . . . Miami improved to 6-0 with a 77-58 triumph over host Florida Gulf Coast. . . . All the high points belonged to Auburn in its 75-54 win over High Point in Auburn, Ala.
Women
Ohio State 89, UNC-Greensboro 56 - Jantel Lavender scored 27 points and Samantha Prahalis added 13 points and 11 assists to lead the No. 3 Buckeyes (6-0) over the Spartans (1-3) at home in Columbus.Lavender, by hitting 11 of 17 shots from the floor and all five of her free throws, stretched her double-figures scoring streak to 72 games.
"For us to think we're going to walk in here and beat Ohio State is ridiculous, out of the question," Spartans coach Lynne Agee said.
Elsewhere: Glory Johnson scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as sixth-ranked Tennessee posted a 69-52 win over host Middle Tennessee. Alysha Clark scored 23 in defeat. . . . LaSondra Barrett scored seven of her 22 points in overtime to lead No. 7 Louisiana State to a 73-65 victory over Tulane in New Orleans.
Freshman Jasmine James scored 17 points to lead No. 14 Georgia to a 75-48 win over Alabama State in Athens, Ga. . . . No. 4 North Carolina had no problems at all with Presbyterian, posting a 92-37 victory in Chapel Hill, N.C.
