Sports in Brief: D.C. United star Olsen retires

Longtime D.C. United and U.S. team midfielder Ben Olsen retired yesterday.

One of the most popular players in franchise history, Olsen was the MLS rookie of the year in 1998 and helped the United win the MLS Cup in 1999 and 2004. He was the MVP of the 1999 championship game.

A graduate of Middletown High in Dauphin County, he was Parade Magazine's national high school player of the year in 1993. He played three years at Virginia, where he was named the Soccer America collegiate player of the year in his junior season in 1997.

He was second in United history in games (221), minutes (17,098), and game-winning goals (13). Olsen, 32, also played 37 games for the U.S. from 1998 to 2007.

Denis Hamlett will not be brought back to coach the Chicago Fire next year after leading them to the Eastern Conference finals in each of his two seasons as head coach. Hamlett's contract expired at the end of the season.

TENNIS: Roger Federer bounced back after losing the first set, rallying to beat Andy Murray, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, in the ATP World Tour Finals in London and ensuring he will have the year-end No. 1 ranking for the fifth time.

Pete Sampras and Jimmy Connors are the only other players to finish the year as the top-ranked player at least five times since the rankings started in 1973.

COLLEGES: Rowan back Kacey Ehret, and Ursinus back Lindsay Doutt and forward Megan Yoder were named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III all-American first team.

Ehret is a senior from Collingswood High in Camden County. Rowan midfielder Jenna Lombardo and forward Lauren Ross earned second-team honors, as did Ursinus forward Michelle Wimmer.

WINTER SPORTS: Five-time U.S. ice-dancing champions Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto will not compete Dec. 3-6 in the Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final in Tokyo.

Belbin, 25, is recovering from oral surgery and was advised to avoid strenuous activity for at least one week, Agosto said. The surgery was performed yesterday.

The pair, who train in Aston, Delaware County, said they would be ready to compete in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, Jan. 14-24 in Spokane, Wash.

HORSE RACING: Zenyatta is getting the Grade 1 race she won twice at Santa Anita renamed in her honor.

Track officials said that the Lady's Secret will be renamed the Zenyatta beginning next fall.
