'Nova's Szczur earns honors

Matt Szczur, Villanova's multiple threat receiver, was named both the Colonial Athletic Association's offensive player of the year and the special teams player of the year yesterday in voting by league coaches.

The Wildcats' Andy Talley was named the CAA coach of the year.

Szczur, a 5-foot-11, 195-pounder from Lower Cape May High is averaging 7.9 yards per touch on offense. The junior is the only Division I player - Football Bowl Subdivision or Football Championship Subdivision - to have produced touchdowns as a rusher, receiver, kick returner, and passer.

Quarterback Chris Whitney, offensive lineman Ben Ijalana, defensive lineman Tim Kukucka, and linebacker Terence Thomas joined Szczur as first-team all-CAA selections.

Talley and Penn coach Al Bagnoli are among 20 candidates for the Sports Network's Eddie Robinson Award, given annually to the top coach in the Football Championship Subdivision. The winner will be announced Dec. 17.

Pierce sidelined. Running back Bernard Pierce was declared out for Temple's game at Ohio on Friday, a contest that will decide the Mid-American Conference East Division title.

Pierce, who already holds Temple freshman records of 1,308 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns, suffered an injury to his left shoulder at the end of last week's game against Kent State.

Huskies drop football. Northeastern announced it will end its football program after 74 seasons because the investment required to make it competitive was too high.

The school spends more than $4 million annually on the football program while an average of 1,500 to 2,000 people attend home games, athletic director Peter Roby said.

The Huskies (3-8) suffered their sixth consecutive losing season under coach Rocky Hager, a Temple assistant for six years before that.

The Huskies' quarterback, Matt Carroll, is a graduate of Unionville High in Chester County. The university said players will keep their athletic scholarships through graduation if they obtain their degrees at Northeastern.

Odrick honored. Penn State's Jared Odrick, a senior defensive tackle, was named the Big Ten's defensive player of the year in voting by the conference's head coaches.

In addition to becoming Penn State's fourth Big Ten defensive player of the year in the last 12 seasons, Odrick was named defensive lineman of the year - the first interior lineman selected for the honor since Ohio State's Dan Wilkinson in 1993.

Curiously, Odrick was only named to the Big Ten's second team in voting by media members.

Quarterback Daryll Clark was named first team for the second consecutive year, joining linebacker Navorro Bowman, center Stefen Wisniewski, and running back Evan Royster in being honored both by the league's coaches and by media voters. Offensive tackle Dennis Landolt (a graduate of Holy Cross High in Burlington County) was named to the first team in voting by the coaches.

Meyer says no ND. With rumors swirling about Charlie Weis' future at Notre Dame, Florida coach Urban Meyer squashed any potential speculation about leaving Gainesville for South Bend, Ind.

"I'm ready to dispel it," said Meyer, who was an assistant at Notre Dame from 1996 to 2000.

Bible stricken. North Carolina State offensive coordinator Dana Bible has been diagnosed with leukemia. Head coach Tom O'Brien said Bible will remain in a Chapel Hill cancer center for 30 days of treatment.
