Hawks' offense fizzles in a loss to DePaul
DePaul's Will Walker scored 25 points, but the Blue Demons' defense was the big story.
The Demons held St. Joe's (3-2) to 37.8 percent shooting from the field and 31.8 percent from three-point range. It was the Hawks' lowest-scoring game since a 68-50 loss to Texas in last year's Maui Invitational.
"It's a disappointing way to finish up a trip," coach Phil Martelli said. "There's no easy fix. You can't easily fix 10-for-22 shooting in the first half, but it's identifiable."
Darrin Govens led the Hawks with 16 points, and Garrett Williamson added 10 points and four assists. DePaul's Devin Hill started in place of the injured Mac Koshwal and scored eight points to go with six rebounds.
The Hawks struggled to get anything going offensively in the first half, scoring a season-low 24 points.
Walker hit three treys for DePaul (3-1) in the first half, the second of which sparked a 13-0 run for the Blue Demons. After the run, DePaul held an 11-point lead, its largest of the night.
The Blue Demons led at the half, 34-24, scoring 12 points off seven St. Joe's turnovers.
Govens had nine points and four rebounds in the first half. The Hawks did not attempt a single free throw in the opening half.
"I thought we started the game slowly, and we had trouble getting the tempo we wanted," Martelli said. "Their possessions were very long, which kept us from getting going. They had a good game plan."
In the second half the Hawks battled back to tie the score twice, but they couldn't retake the lead. After a Charoy Bentley jumper with 41/2 minutes left, St. Joe's didn't score another field goal.
Govens hit two freebies to tie the score at 49, then again at 51, but those would be St. Joe's last points of the night. Behind four free throws by Walker, the Blue Demons ran off seven points to win the game.
