Eagles Notes: Reid hedges on Stacy Andrews
The day after Stacy Andrews was a healthy scratch during the Eagles' 24-20 win over the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field, Reid was asked if he saw the offensive guard's physical limitations the week before when he got just his second start of the season at San Diego.
Reid's answer: "Well, yeah, it's just, uh, yeah."
Earlier, Reid had given a more expansive answer when asked why Andrews didn't dress for the first time this season, saying he preferred Max Jean-Gilles as the top reserve at guard because he can play both sides at the position.
Andrews' second start of the season at right guard was made possible the week before at San Diego because left tackle Jason Peters was out with an ankle injury that forced left guard Todd Herremans to move out to left tackle. The domino effect moved Nick Cole from right guard to left guard and allowed Andrews to start for the first time since the opener at Carolina.
Andrews had split time in past games at right guard with both Cole and Jean-Gilles. The fact that Andrews is now not even the top reserve at guard could not have been what the Eagles envisioned when they signed Andrews to a six-year deal that included a $3 million roster bonus this season.
Reid continued to say that Andrews' surgically repaired right knee is a factor in the offensive lineman's limited playing time. Andrews underwent surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament in January.
"We knew with Stacy's knee that first year back after knee surgery, that's a tough thing especially as late as he had it," Reid said. "This is nothing on Stacy's will or knowledge. It's just being able to plant that leg and feel comfortable on it. It goes in cycles a little bit. He'll be back in there. Just back off a little bit and he'll pick it up as we go."
Samuel OK. After missing the entire second half Sunday with what was initially reported as a neck stinger, cornerback Asante Samuel was doing well yesterday, and it appears as if he'll be ready for Sunday's game against Washington, according to Reid.
"It's more of a neck strain than a stinger," Reid said. "He feels good. He really felt good after the game and today he likewise felt good."
It's possible the Eagles could also be getting some much-needed reinforcements at linebacker for Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins. Reid said linebacker Akeem Jordan is "close" to returning after missing the last two games with a hyperextended right knee.
"He has been able to run in the pool and actually has done some stuff on the treadmill running," Reid said. "We'll just see how he does the next week."
Reid said Jordan would not have been able to practice yesterday, but he's hopeful he'll be able to return to the practice field tomorrow.
Extra points. Reid listed wide receiver Kevin Curtis (knee) and Brian Westbrook (concussion) as out of Sunday's game, and it sounded unlikely that safety Quintin Demps (high ankle sprain) will be able to return against the Redskins. . . . Greg Isdaner, an offensive linemen out of Episcopal Academy and West Virginia University, will work out for the Eagles today at the NovaCare Complex, his agent, Stephan Halper, said in an e-mail. Isdaner, 6-foot-4 and 322 pounds, was a three-year starter at West Virginia. He bypassed his final year of eligibility with the Mountaineers to enter this year's draft. After not being selected, Isdaner signed with the Dallas Cowboys, who released him Sept. 1.
