College Basketball: No. 6 Purdue edges Tennessee
E'Twaun Moore scored 22 points to lead the No. 6 Boilermakers to a 73-72 victory over the No. 9 Volunteers last night in the championship game of the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.
The Vols (4-1) had a chance to win it, but center Wayne Chism missed an open three-pointer from the top of the key with 2 seconds left.
Robbie Hummel scored 20 points for the Boilermakers (4-0) and JaJuan Johnson added 11 despite playing 18 minutes before fouling out.
Moore was selected the tournament MVP.
North Carolina 93, Gardner-Webb 72 - Deon Thompson scored 22 points to help the No. 11 Tar Heels bounce back from their first loss and beat the Runnin' Bulldogs (3-1) in Chapel Hill, N.C.
North Carolina (5-1) was ranked sixth last week before falling to Syracuse by 16 points in the final of the 2K Sports Classic on Friday.
Grayson Flittner scored 32 points for Gardner-Webb.
Louisville 80, Appalachian State 53 - Samardo Samuels had 16 points, and Preston Knowles and Edgar Sosa added 11 points each as the No. 16 Cardinals (4-0) surged past the Mountaineers (2-3) in Louisville, Ky.
Clemson 102, Winthrop 66 - Trevor Booker had 15 points and 11 rebounds to help the No. 19 Tigers win their 30th straight game in November, this one a rout of the Eagles (2-2) in Clemson, S.C. The Tigers (4-0) haven't lost in college basketball's opening month since 2004.
Maryland 79, Chaminade 51 - The No. 21 Terrapins overcame a slow start in the first round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational in Lahaina, Hawaii, and defeated the Division II Silverswords (0-1) to move to 4-0 on the season. Sean Mosley had 19 points for the Terrapins, who will face Cincinnati tonight.
Cincinnati 67, Vanderbilt 58 - Yancy Gates scored 12 points in an 18-2 first-half run that set the tone for the Bearcats' victory over the No. 24 Commodores (2-1) in the first round of the Maui Invitational in Lahaina, Hawaii. The Bearcats (3-0) outrebounded Vanderbuilt by 53-32.
Lehigh 86, Monmouth 74 - CJ McCollum scored 15 points to lead four players in double figures as the Mountain Hawks (2-2) defeated the Hawks (1-3) in Bethlehem, Pa.
Women
Duke 57, Charlotte 44 - Joy Cheek scored 12 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to help the No. 10 Blue Devils (3-1) defeat the 49ers (1-3) in Durham, N.C.Xavier 92, Mississippi Valley State 52 - Freshman Katie Rutan scored a career-high 17 points, and the No. 9 Musketeers used their bench liberally while pulling away the Devilettes (1-1) in Cincinnati.
Elsewhere: LaSalle's Morgan Robertson, whose family lives just 45 minutes from the Wichita State campus, scored 11 points to lead the Explorers, who fell to their hosts, 56-43. . . . Caitlin Shaw scored 20 points but University of the Sciences fell to visiting Millersville, 69-52.
