St. Joseph's falls to Purdue in Paradise Jam
The Hawks (3-1) looked poised to make it a long night for the Boilermakers, keeping in stride with the Big Ten team for the first 20 minutes, but the second half was a different story.
After holding a 31-30 lead at the break, Purdue poured on a 19-2 run to start the second. Purdue's suffocating defense held St. Joe's to just one field goal - an Idris Hilliard jumper - through the first 91/2 minutes of the second half.
On the back of Ryne Smith, who scored 16 second-half points, the Boilermakers (5-0) cruised.
"I've always believed basketball's a game of skill, and we didn't show skill in any part of the game," Hawks coach Phil Martelli said. "To come out of here with 23 turnovers and shooting just 58 percent from the line is disappointing."
Garrett Williamson was the lone Hawk to score in double figures, with 12 points. Darrin Govens had just three points to go with five assists and two steals. Purdue's Jajuan Johnson had 18 points and 10 rebounds. E'twaun Moore had 11 points and Mark Wohlford 10 in the win.
The Boilermakers generated 32 points off turnovers.
"Their aggressive play exposed some flaws tonight, but it would be a great tribute to our team and the tournament to come out of here 2-1," Martelli said.
St. Joe's jumped out to a 9-2 lead with Williamson contributing five early points. Midway through the first half, a Williamson jumper gave the Hawks an 18-9 lead - their largest of the game.
The Hawks hit four early three-pointers to keep the Boilermakers at bay, but Purdue battled back and took its first lead, 25-24, on a Moore jumper with just under four minutes left in the first.
The lead changed four more times, but a Moore free throw in the final seconds gave Purdue its halftime lead.
Purdue will face Tennessee for the Paradise Jam championship tonight, while St. Joe's will take on DePaul in the third-place game.
