Syracuse drops Rutgers

Rutgers' stay in the Associated Press top 25 will certainly be a brief one.

The Scarlet Knights (7-3, 2-3 Big East), voted into the poll last weekend, were upset yesterday by Syracuse, 31-13.

Playing at home in Syracuse, N.Y., the Orange (4-7, 1-5) sacked Rutgers' Tom Savage nine times, tying a Syracuse record. Late in the game, the freshman from Cardinal O'Hara was taken down on three straight plays.

Savage was held to 66 yards passing, and he threw two interceptions as Rutgers, which was No. 1 in the nation in turnover differential, finished the game minus-two.

"The game plan was great. We did a great job converting third downs, not making any penalties," Syracuse quarterback Greg Paulus said.

Northwestern 33, Wisconsin 31 - In the final two minutes, Brian Peters recovered a fumble and Jordan Mabin picked off the Badgers' Scott Tolzien as the Wildcats (8-4, 5-3 Big Ten) upset Wisconsin (8-3, 5-3) in Evanston, Ill.

"I looked up and saw the ball coming and I'm like, 'Oh, wow, it's here.' I had to go up and get it," Mabin said.

Mike Kafka threw two TD passes to Andrew Brewer for the Wildcats, who had surprised Iowa two weeks ago.

Mississippi 25, Louisiana State 23 - As time ticked down, Ole Miss (8-3, 4-3 SEC) stopped Terrance Toliver 5 yards short of the winning points in scoring an upset at home over the No. 10 Tigers.

After an onside kick, Jordan Jefferson hit Brandon LaFell for 26 yards and then Toliver for 43, but LSU (8-3, 4-3) wasn't able to get off one last play.

Tailback Dexter McCluster sparked the Rebels with 148 rushing yards, as well as a 27-yard touchdown pass.

California 34, Stanford 28 - Shane Vereen ran for 193 yards and three touchdowns, and Mike Mohamed intercepted a pass from Andrew Luck at the 3 with less than two minutes left as Cal (8-3, 5-3 Pac-10) spoiled the Rose Bowl hopes of the No. 14 Cardinal (7-4, 6-3) in the Big Game in Stanford, Calif.

Stanford's Toby Gerhart ran for 136 yards and four TDs.

Texas Christian 45, Wyoming 10 - For the first time since the days of Davey O'Brien, TCU is 11-0. The No. 4 Horned Frogs (7-0 in the Mountain West) matched Dutch Meyer's 1938 national champs with a win over the host Cowboys (5-6, 3-4).

Matthew Tucker and Joseph Turner each ran for two touchdowns, and Greg McCoy immediately countered a 98-yard Wyoming TD with an 81-yard kick return for a score.

Florida 62, Florida International 3 - Tim Tebow accounted for three touchdowns and Brandon Spikes returned an interception 41 yards for a score as the No. 1 Gators (11-0) extended the nation's longest winning streak to 21 vs. FIU (3-8) in Gainesville.

Alabama 45, Chattanooga 0 - Heisman front-runner Mark Ingram had touchdown runs of 25 and 40 yards, then took a seat on the bench to watch the No. 2 Crimson Tide (11-0) finish off the Mocs (6-5) at home. The Tide's Javier Arenas set the SEC career record with his seventh punt return for a touchdown.

Texas 51, Kansas 20 - Colt McCoy set an NCAA record with his 43d career victory as a starter, passing for 396 yards as the No. 3 Longhorns (11-0, 7-0) wrapped up the Big Twelve South title at home in Austin vs. Kansas (5-6, 1-6) and embattled coach Mark Mangino. McCoy is 43-7, breaking the wins record he shared with Georgia quarterback David Greene (2001-04).

Ohio State 21, Michigan 10 - Michigan quarterback Tate Forcier turned the football over five times, and the No. 9 Buckeyes (10-2, 7-1 Big Ten) outrushed the Wolverines by 251-80 to beat their fierce rivals in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Having lost 13 of their last 15 Big Ten games, the Wolverines (5-7, 1-7) finished with back-to-back losing records for the first time since 1962-63. After the game, however, retiring athletic director Bill Martin said Rich Rodriguez would return to coach Michigan next season.

Iowa 12, Minnesota 0 - In a game that saw 17 punts and little in the way of excitement, the No. 15 Hawkeyes (10-2, 6-2 Big Ten) prevailed in Iowa City. Adam Weber was 14 of 40 for 153 yards for the Golden Gophers (6-6, 3-5).

Virginia Tech 38, North Carolina State 10 - Ryan Williams ran for 120 yards and four touchdowns as the No. 16 Hokies (8-3, 5-2 ACC) prevailed over the Wolfpack (4-7, 1-6) at home in Blacksburg.

Clemson 34, Virginia 21 - The No. 18 Tigers (8-3, 6-2 ACC) beat the Cavaliers (3-8, 2-5) on the day Clemson wrapped up its first trip to the ACC title game. The Tigers, who clinched their division when North Carolina beat Boston College, will play Georgia Tech in two weeks.

Clemson's C.J. Spiller set the ACC's single-season all-purpose yardage mark, surpassing the 2,059 of Virginia's Thomas Jones in 1999.

Brigham Young 38, Air Force 21 - Max Hall broke Ty Detmer's school victory record, winning his 30th game for No. 19 BYU (9-2, 5-1 Mountain West) in a win over Air Force (7-5, 5-3) in Provo, Utah. Hall threw five TD passes.

Oregon State 42, Washington State 10 - Jacquizz Rodgers ran for 165 yards and two TDs as the streaking Beavers (8-3, 6-2 Pac-10) piled up 567 yards of offense in Pullman, Wash. It was the eighth loss in a row for the Cougars (1-10, 0-8).

Miami 34, Duke 16 - Jacory Harris threw for 348 yards and two TDs as the No. 21 Hurricanes (8-5, 5-3 ACC) staved off Thaddeus Lewis (303 passing yards) and the Blue Devils (5-6, 3-4) in Miami.

Utah 38, San Diego State 7 - Bouncing back from a loss to Texas Christian, the No. 23 Utes (9-2, 6-1 Mountain West) scored 38 points in the first half and coasted by the Aztecs (4-7, 2-5) in Salt Lake City.

Houston 55, Memphis 14 - Heisman hopeful Case Keenum threw 5 TD passes, breaking David Klingler's school career mark of of 91, as the No. 24 Cougars (9-2, 5-2 Conference USA) blasted the Tigers (2-9, 1-6) at home. Keenum has 94 TD passes.
