Baseball Notes: Royals' Greinke wins Cy Young
Greinke went 16-8 with a major-league-low 2.16 ERA for the Kansas City Royals.
Felix Hernandez, who finished a distant second, was 19-5 with a 2.49 ERA for the Seattle Mariners.
The NL winner will be announced tomorrow.
His victory total this year matched that of Arizona's Brandon Webb three years ago for the fewest by a starting pitcher to win a Cy Young Award in a non-shortened season and was the fewest by an AL starter to win in a full-length season.
But Steve Carlton was the only Cy Young Award winner who pitched for a club with a poorer record than the 65-97 Royals. The Hall of Fame lefty was an astounding 27-10 with a 1.97 ERA for the 1972 Phillies, who went 59-97.
Yankees. New York declined a $1.25 million option on pitcher Sergio Mitre. The righthander, who was not on the Yankees' postseason roster, becomes eligible for salary arbitration.
Indians. Sandy Alomar Jr. is back with the Cleveland Indians. The former all-star catcher was hired by new Indians manager Manny Acta as a first-base coach. Alomar spent the last two years as a catching instructor for the New York Mets. He also will mentor Cleveland's catchers, which include Lou Marson.
