Sports in Brief: Mercedes-Benz in Formula One

Mercedes-Benz said yesterday it would take over champion team Brawn GP and return to Formula One racing under its own name for the first time in 55 years.

The German automaker, which supplied engines to British team McLaren for 15 years, abandoned racing in 1955 after an accident at Le Mans killed more than 80 people.

Brawn GP, which took over for Honda when it pulled out of the series in March, had a spectacular first season, with Jenson Button winning the 2009 drivers' title and the team taking the constructors' championship.

There was no announcement on who would drive for the team.

COLLEGES: Rider's Mike Ringgold, a 6-foot-7 forward out of Roman Catholic High, was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference player of the week in men's basketball.

Drexel's Gabriela Marginean was named the Colonial Athletic Association's player of the week in women's basketball.

St. Joe's Darrin Govens, a senior guard out of Chester High, was named the Big Five men's player of the week.

Temple's Shaqwedia Wallace, a junior guard, was named the Big Five women's player of the week.

In volleyball, Temple senior Yun Yi Zhang was named the Atlantic Ten offensive player of the week, and junior Ariel Pierre was named defensive player of the week.

Elsewhere: Northwestern forward Kevin Coble, the team's leading scorer and rebounder for the last three seasons, will have season-ending surgery on his fractured left foot; backup Jeff Ryan (knee) is also out. . . . Olney High guard Jesse Morgan signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Seton Hall next year.

BASEBALL: Former Phillie and Met Wally Backman was named manager of New York's Brooklyn Cyclones farm team in the New York-Penn League.

A member of the Mets' 1986 World Series championship team, Backman was hired to manage the Arizona Diamondbacks in November 2004. He was fired four days later after the New York Times reported he had been arrested twice and had financial problems.

Elsewhere: Catcher Ramon Hernandez agreed to a one-year contract for $3 million to remain with the Cincinnati Reds.

TENNIS: Rafael Nadal will lead defending champion Spain in next month's Davis Cup final against the Czech Republic. The second-ranked Nadal missed last year's final victory over Argentina with a knee injury. The best-of-five series on indoor clay will be played in Barcelona starting Dec. 4.

NOTEWORTHY: Athletes in Austria who are caught doping could be charged with fraud and face prison terms of up to 10 years. The penalties come in an amendment to the national fraud act, which is expected to take effect Jan. 1.

Mayor Nutter and Gov. Rendell will serve as honorary co-chairmen for Philadelphia's World Cup soccer bid for 2018 or 2022.

A U.S. magistrate in Memphis denied a temporary restraining order sought by golfer Doug Barron, who was seeking to block a one-year doping ban by the PGA Tour.
