Redskins pull reverse, OK signs at stadium

Washington is doing an about-face on preventing fans from bringing any signs to home games. The Redskins issued a news release about 21/2 hours before yesterday's game against the visiting Denver Broncos saying they had "revised" their stadium sign policy.

Owner Dan Snyder said in the statement that he understands that "some fans want to express their feelings with signs and they should do so, as long as they stay within the boundaries of good taste and don't block the view of other fans."

Last month, the team banned spectators from carrying any signs or banners into its stadium, citing fan security and comfort. That policy had coincided with an increase of signs critical of Snyder and front office chief Vinny Cerrato.

Browns to start Quinn. File this under the category of be careful what you wish for. Cleveland quarterback Brady Quinn will get his first start tonight since being benched during a rocky outing against the Baltimore Ravens in September. The Browns lost that one, 34-3, and in that game Quinn was 6 for 8 passing for just 34 yards and an interception. He was yanked for Derek Anderson, and since then Cleveland has gone 1-4.

Obviously, Quinn is happy about getting another opportunity to start but here's the rub - tonight's game is against those same Ravens. Baltimore is desperate for a win after losing four of five and still has one of the more dangerous defenses in the league.

Cleveland signed free-agent punter Reggie Hodges in case Dave Zastudil can't kick in tonight's game. Hodges was waived by the Titans on Oct. 27.

Falcons' Turner turns ankle. The Atlanta Falcons are holding their breath on star running back Michael Turner, who left in the second quarter of yesterday's game with the Carolina Panthers with a sprained ankle.

Until the injury that he suffered at the end of a 10-yard run, Turner had gained 111 yards on just nine carries. In fact, he had been on quite a roll, with 428 yards in less than 10 quarters. With Turner out, the Falcons lost to the Panthers, 28-19.

Falcons coach Mike Smith said Turner will undergo tests today to determine if he'll be out for an extended period.

Atlanta is hurting at running back with Turner's backup, Jerious Norwood, also out of yesterday's game with a hip injury.

Turner was replaced by Jason Snelling, who had 61 yards and a TD on 18 carries.

Bengals' Benson hurt. Cincinnati rushing leader Cedric Benson was pulled in the second quarter of yesterday's 18-12 victory over Pittsburgh with an unspecified hip injury. He returned for one series, then left the game.

Benson had three 100-yard games in his previous four starts and began the game second in the NFL with 837 yards rushing. He had 22 yards on seven carries before leaving.

Russell pulled again. For the second straight home game, Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell was benched for poor play. He was 9 for 24 for just 67 yards when he was consigned to the sideline, with backup Bruce Gradkowski filling in.

The Raiders lost to Kansas City, 16-10, even though the Chiefs were 1 for 15 on third-down conversions. The Raiders were 2 for 16 in the same category.
