Sixers show fight but fall to Bulls

CHICAGO - In front of a sellout crowd at the United Center last night, the 76ers did something they had not done the night before: They played every possession hard.

Unfortunately for the Sixers, the outcome was the same: They lost, outlasted by the Chicago Bulls, 94-88.

The Sixers dropped to 4-6. The Bulls improved to 5-4.

On Friday night, the Sixers were outhustled and outplayed in a loss to the Utah Jazz. Last night's game was fought hard, if not well executed.

"Night and day from [the Utah game], and if we would have had some shots go down, I think it's a different ball game . . .," Sixers coach Eddie Jordan said. "I liked the way we executed, our defense was into itself, I liked the way we rebounded. And yet we couldn't make free throws or open shots tonight when it counted."

The Sixers, led by Andre Iguodala with a game-high 24 points, finished shooting 42 percent from the floor and 61.9 percent from the free-throw line.

"Against Utah, our toughness was questioned, and I don't think we brought the fight like we needed to, but here I thought we did a better job," guard Willie Green said.

Until the last few minutes of the third quarter, the Sixers controlled the game. They led by a point at halftime and by nine during the third quarter. But by the fourth quarter's start, the Sixers trailed by four.

Quickly, it became more.

Jordan opened the fourth in a three-quarter-court press, dropping into a zone defense.

Within a few minutes - and a changed defense later - the Bulls had opened a 14-point lead. Midway through, the lead had reached 17.

The Bulls finished with six players in double figures, led by Luol Deng and Kirk Hinrich with 19 apiece.

A few minutes into the fourth, Sixers reserve forward Marreese Speights left the game with a sprained left knee. Speights, who will be further evaluated today, did not return.

For the final 9 minutes, 38 seconds, Jordan went with reserve Rodney Carney.

Power forward Elton Brand did not play the game's final 12:45. He finished with 11 points and six rebounds.

From the jump ball, the Sixers played the way they should play: running, slashing, blocking, and boarding. In the first three minutes, each of the Sixers' five starters did what he is supposed to do. Center Samuel Dalembert had an overpowering block; Iguodala had a dunk in transition; Thaddeus Young made all of his free throws; Lou Williams, who outplayed Chicago star point guard Derrick Rose, slashed and finished; and Brand backed himself into the low post and faded for a jumper.

The Bulls were forced to call a time-out, trailing, 11-2. Midway through the first quarter, the fans started shifting in their seats, listless, their team trailing by 17-4.

Within minutes, Chicago drained that lead, responding with an 18-3 run and taking a 22-20 lead.

Iguodala acknowledged that the Sixers relinquished their lead too quickly.

"I think I have to be a little more aggressive there, get to the foul line or something to stop that run," he said. "But I saw a lot of things that I think were positive. . . . I actually think we made some improvements."

Last 7 minutes of game looked familiar...5 guys playing defense, causing turnovers and bad shots then getting out on the break. First time this year. Almost felt like players said to Eddie J. "just let us be who we are and forget trying to shoehorn us into your system".

Loudly and to much derision, I criticized the Elton Brand deal.. All that money for a guy coming off a big injury into a system that makes no sense for him? Then, Mo Cheeks became the sacrifice to Stefanski's stupidity, having been forced to try to win with Brand and no outside shooter. Now, the Sixers look lost again, trying to figure out an elaborate new offense. It won't happen of course, but here's a solution: fire Stefanski, bring back Cheeks, get rid of Jordan, resign yourself to cleaning house and winding up with lottery picks. Thanks to Stefanski, the Sixers have no money for free agents in a year when there will be a lot of them. But hey, Brand looks great! Truth is, it increasingly looks like we need to start over.

New coach, new GM, and the same old team giving up big leads in a heartbeat. Will Comcast put up with 10,000 seats a night?

Maybe Ed Stefanski will go back to the Nets and do Philly a favor from firing him. He comes from a bad team and now has turned the Sixers into a laughingstock. If Ed Snyder is reading this Ed please fire Stefanski and send Elton Brand with him where ever he goes.

Oppressed#1
From The Third Book of Nostradamus: "Woe to the City that loves, and loves too easily. A damaging bald man will come, and smite the salary cap mortally, till all is left in ruins. He shall mix oil and water, and the stain shall be everlasting. A hobbled Brand and a clanging Iggy shall be chained to the earth for many a season. The round ball shall roll out of bounds. The loud empty seats shall grow silent, all to be chronicled by a ruthless, insightful sharpshooter. Stay at home, ye lovers, the carnage shall be great." (iao).

Carney on the floor and Brand on the bench for the last 10 minutes? What is the world coming to? In theory, this team should be better than last year with a "healthy" Brand. Anybody else miss Andre Miller yet?

Nothing but the truth
The Sixers have to fully adopt the teachings of Eddie Jordan. After all he is an championship caliber coach with a championship as a player. A sold out arena in Chicago who wanted to witness the "el terrible tres" of Iggy, Brand and Dalembert and the head spinning ball movement reminiscent of the Harlem Globe Trotters of the 70's. The Sixers got out early as the offense was as smooth as South Indian silk in the spring. Brand and Thad set the tone stroking shot after shot and then the Miracle at the United Center commenced. Watching Deng, Salmons, Rose and Hinrich hit a continuous array of improvisational shot one after the other are the little miracles teams need when playing the Sixers. Unbelievable shots can work now but in a 7 game series I can't see those shots falling in for more than 1 game or even 2 max. Although, this is one of the reasons that the Sixers pack the house on the road because fans know that to beat these Sixers you will need a miracle. Thats' why I booked my tickets early for Nov 30 when they come to Dallas because I know they will put on a show. Once this lineup is set and the offense becomes second nature I could see these Sixers challenging the Lakers win streak of 33 games.

Nothing but the truth, I hope your comments are ringing with sarcasm because otherwise you have no clue. Nobody goes to see the Sixers when they're home; do you really think that they are a draw on the road? This team is a disaster. I don't know if Elton Brand is the worst free agent signing in NBA history but it is up there. It is obvious the that the Achilles tendon injury has affected his game: he is a backup(at best) power forward in this league. Dalembert continues to look lost; Iggy, Lou and Thaddeus are painstakingly inconsistent. Speights and Holiday are this team's future. They should get serious minutes and you can mix and match with the other players on this roster. 30-35 wins,a late lottery pick and plenty of empty seats is the Sixers fate this year.

Brand got 31 mins, and in those he racked up 11 pts and 6 boards. Don't you think that if he had gotten around 40-42 mins he would have put up about 18 and 10? Isn't that what we brought him here for, those types of numbers? What is Eddie doing? I can't believe Rodney Carney gives you a better opportunity to win down the stretch over EB. The problem with this team in addition to STILL not capable of playing good D, is that they've got a bunch of guys playing out of position. LouWill is NOT a point guard, Dre Dala is not a 2 guard, but then if you play him at the 3, where does that leave Thaddeus? This team is a mess and to the poster above who said 10k per game, that's wishful thinking. I can't see them selling more than 8k per game, unless Lebron/Wade/Kobe etc come into town.

Review - Coach Eddie/brutal; Brand/best days past; Iguodala/good not great, a piece of puzzle but should be your third best player; Thad/wild, good athlete but just OK bball player; Lou/quick but poor defender and shooter; Speights/big talent, small head; Jason Smith/career bench player; Carney/still intriguing; Willie/no consistency, a 4th guard at best; Jrue/NBA body, good instincts, chance to be a starting PG; Kapono/good standstill shooter, 1 dimensional bench option.
