NFL: Falcons' coach draws a $15,000 fine

The NFL fined Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith $15,000 for a sideline scuffle on Sunday, while Washington Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall avoided any punishment.

"I received a letter from the NFL office this morning," Smith said yesterday.

Sources who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity, because the league has not officially commented on the situation, said the NFL also fined Redskins safety LaRon Landry $7,500; Washington defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth $5,000; and Falcons director of athletic performance Jeff Fish $2,500.

The trouble started after Landry delivered a late hit on quarterback Matt Ryan along the Atlanta sideline.

Cardinals. Wide receiver Sean Morey said yesterday that he played with a concussion against the Chicago Bears despite his role raising awareness about the head injuries.

Morey said that he downplayed the symptoms.

The wideout hasn't practiced this week because of the concussion.

He said he convinced himself that the head injury - suffered in a game against Carolina - was connected to his flu symptoms.

Last month, Morey was named co-chair of the NFL Players Association concussion and traumatic brain injury committee.

Meanwhile, the NFL has given Arizona a 24-hour extension to the television blackout deadline for Sunday's game in Glendale against the Seattle Seahawks.

Chargers. Because of a sore ankle, center Nick Hardwick is unlikely to play Sunday when San Diego hosts the Eagles.

Hardwick was hurt in the season opener and had ankle surgery.

Back at practice were running back LaDainian Tomlinson and tight end Antonio Gates. Each sat out Wednesday's workout - Tomlinson because of a hip bruise and Gates because of a sore foot.

Dolphins. Starting guard Justin Smiley was sent to a doctor and remained sidelined because of a shoulder injury, increasing the likelihood he will miss Sunday's game against Tampa Bay.

Redskins. Clinton Portis' concussion will keep the running back out of Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos.

Portis was hurt in a helmet-to-helmet hit in the first quarter of Sunday's 31-17 loss to Atlanta.

Bills. Coach Dick Jauron remains hopeful that Terrell Owens will play against Tennessee on Sunday after a strained hip forced the receiver to miss his second straight practice.

Jauron said that Owens is "still struggling" with the injury, which flared up during the team's day off on Tuesday.

Titans. Wide receiver Justin Gage has several broken transverse bones in his lower back, and he is unlikely to play Sunday against Buffalo.

The receiver was injured when he fell to the ground after making a leaping catch to set up the go-ahead touchdown in a 34-27 win at San Francisco.

Gage started hurting once the adrenaline wore off, and the Titans ran a variety of tests.

Lions. Outside linebacker Ernie Sims will not play Sunday at Minnesota because of a partially torn hamstring that might jeopardize the rest of his season.

Sims was injured in the third quarter Sunday at Seattle. He said doctors told him he has a Grade 2 tear, which is a partial tear in the muscle.

Sims said he has no timetable for returning.
