76ers' Brand frustrated with his playing time

Although Elton Brand is no longer injured, he's on the sideline nearly as much as if he were.

Expecting him to complain, publicly, about such a thing is a lot like asking him to miss a box out: He's spent a career trying not to.

But there are hints. Frustration exists.

You'd be crazy to think it didn't.

Listening to Brand talk about this season - and listening to 76ers coach Eddie Jordan talk about his lineup - is a lesson in reading between the lines.

Through seven games this season, in which the Sixers are 3-4, Brand is playing 27.6 minutes a game. He's fifth on the team in scoring with a 10.1 average, shooting 45.2 percent.

"Of course there's a level of frustration creeping in, being 3-4," Brand said after yesterday's practice at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. "We're close to being 5-2 and it's all smiles around here, but being 3-4, it's frustrating, absolutely."

Tonight at 7:30, the Sixers play the winless New Jersey Nets at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J.

Before signing a five-year, $80 million contract with the Sixers before last season, Brand, in nine NBA seasons, had never played a full NBA season averaging less than 37.0 minutes a game.

Two seasons ago, he missed all but eight games with a torn Achilles. Last season, he missed all but 29 games with a shoulder injury.

After averaging 20.3 points and 10.1 rebounds during his first nine NBA seasons, Brand is averaging 13.1 points and 8.3 rebounds a game in 36 games with the Sixers.

Added up, all those numbers, spanning a decade, can be summarized with a few words: Things aren't going as planned.

Brand is sitting at the end of close games. He's become a very expensive fifth option. And Jordan seems less concerned with how to incorporate Brand and more concerned with Brand accepting the situation.

"I look at how you play in the game," Jordan said. "It's not all about stats; anybody can get stats and lose. There are a lot of good stat players on losing teams that when you put them on winning teams, they're not good players. Not to say I'm talking about our guys."

In his career, Brand has made only one playoff appearance, in 2006 with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Does Jordan see any indication of Brand becoming his pre-injury self?

"I see some of it, yeah," Jordan said. "But I don't see all of it."

Is Jordan worried about sitting Brand at the end of games?

"I don't really worry about that . . ." Jordan said. "There's a bottom line to this business and if I like the six or seven guys I rotate at the end of games with matchups and the way they're playing, I'm playing those guys."

Added Jordan: "I'm not changing the lineup, the starters, and I'm not changing the way I feel about who's playing well at the end of the game."

Brand said that "absolutely" this was the first time in his career he has sat when games are being decided. He said that, of course, he's pressing to show he can return to pre-injury effectiveness.

"I'm human, so it happens," Brand said. "I don't think I've had the opportunity to be out there and say, 'Hey, OK, let's do something different,' you know what I mean?"

After Monday night's 119-115 loss to the Phoenix Suns - one of the games this season in which Brand sat the entire fourth quarter - a question to Brand went something like, "So, you've been on the bench at the end of the last three games?"

Added Brand: "At least . . ."

Change a comin'? Both Brand and center Samuel Dalembert have seen limited minutes. Both have watched many of this season's fourth quarters. Backup center Marreese Speights has seen the bulk of the end-of-game minutes at center.

Jordan said he wasn't considering a lineup change.

"When you deal with the starting lineup, that can be a sensitive issue among the players," Jordan explained. "I don't want to touch a nerve right there right now. Look, are there reasons or are there some reasons for me to warrant to change the starting lineup? Yeah, because our second group has been playing very well. I like the way Marreese has been playing, I like the way Jason Smith has been playing . . . but does that warrant me to change the starting lineup? No, not right now."

Vote away. Yesterday, the NBA released its 2010 all-star ballot. The Sixers have three players on it: Andre Iguodala, Brand, and Dalembert. Iguodala and Brand are both listed as forwards, two of 24 on the ballot. Dalembert is one of 12 centers listed. For more information on how to vote, visit the Sixers Web site at Sixers.com.

I LOVE seeing Mo Speights or Jason Smith out there instead of Dalembert. Then I don't have to throw things at the TV. Samuel Dalembert.... ON THE ALL STAR ROSTER?!?!?! Oh my God, seriously, has ANYONE watched basketball the PAST 6 YEARS?!?! Samuel Dalembert does NOT NOW HOW TO PLAY BASKETBALL. The stupidity of people in pro sports is astounding, at least Eddie Jordan is starting to realize a little bit that Sam Dalembert does not know how to play basketball.

Although I disagree with Jordan's decision of not playing Brand late in games, you got to give him credit for being brutally honest. Brand is a talented player but his numbers were always inflated from playing on bad teams. He's just a tad exposed now that he's in the spotlight here in Philadelphia.

Though a bit shocked that Jordan actually said it, "anybody can get stats and lose" sums up my take on the Brand signing when it happened. SOMEONE on the Clippers had to get points and rebounds. Brand was the one that got them, but Clippers' points aren't real points, nor are Clippers' rebounds. The fanbase should be angry and contentious. Times are tight, but there the Sixers' go and spend 80 million dollars on a Dodge Stratus and pledge to the fanbase that they just invested in a Toyota LandCruiser. It's dishonest and insulting, because everyone knows the Stratus with neither size nor power was average at best when new, and the model we got is leaking oil and is 8 years old. Enjoy the ride THREE years from now. (iao).

I'm not impressed with Brand, at this point. But I'm even less impressed by a coach beating his chest about 'his way or no way' when he's got a lifetime losing record and a new team that's looking lousy on defense and similarly lousy with regards to sustained effort. A lot of fingers to be pointed in a lot of directions. I see a losing record, some really lousy quarters, consistently lousy defense, a bizarre roster, poor attendance, and...now...a top-paid player who's not happy and being public about it. This franchise continues to have some serious problems. Bad contracts, bad acquisitions, bad results, and, again, a bad coach and coaching staff.

Armen Gilliam II... Gumby returns.... It was a bad signing by Stephanski but Brande is not killing this team. What killed this team is Billy King signing Sammy and Iggy to big long term contracts..I guess we just have to wait until these stiffs are flushed out.

How much playing time to give Elton Brand is a major question---on one hand, he was brought in to be a franchise player, and a healthy, fully functional Elton Brand should make a huge and positive difference for the Sixers; on the other hand there is the always nagging possibility (likelihood?) that he will suffer an injury and be lost for much or all of the season, again leaving the team grasping for a replacement. So what Eddie Jordan appears to be doing is to be hedging his bet, giving Brand just enough PT to stay in playing shape, but neither enough time to risk an injury or to satisfy Brand's desire to be on the floor and to get into the flow of the game. Perhaps the best plan is for EJ to add increments of PT for Brand over the next dozen or so games to see how well he adjusts and steps up his output once he's putting in 40 or more minutes a night.

If you look at the numbers, Speights plays lights out offense but the team suffers as a whole on the defensive end. Interestingly, in the last seven games, with both Brand and Dalembert on the floor, they've given up fewer points than when either are out of the lineup. What's incredibly frustrating is Jordan yanking Holiday off of the floor when he's playing well, and putting in Lou Williams, who settles for jumpers. Same with Iguodala, who goes through this 15 ft jumper phase every game. The Sixers did not utilize Brand against the Suns at all even though the Suns had no answer for him. They gave him the ball 3, maybe 4 times at most where he made a high percentage shot. And of course, when Kapono is on the floor, no one ever passes him the ball. Thad looks lost on both the offensive and defensive ends. All of this I blame squarely on Eddie Jordan, as all of this reeks of terrible coaching. There's no defensive philosophy at all so far. It's incredible that Mo Cheeks was run out of town and Jordan gets his job.

'psv', simply an excellent comment. So funny that the white guy and alleged sharpshooter Kapono can't get anyone to pass him the ball. Kinda like an SNL skit, back when SNL was funny. Maybe he should wear a day-glo orange, "White Guy Shooter" jersey? I gave up on Jordan as a coach when he publicly said "we're not going to defend that" (open 3 point shots). But take heart, the Messianic Princeton Offense will solve all of this ... by next season ... after the All-Star break ... yeah, definitely, before the playoffs next season. Yeah, that's the ticket. I and most of the Sixers fans are frustrated that you aren't Josh Smith.. So Elton shut up and show us this game Ed Stefanski was so in love with that he had to have you.

This in a nutshell is what Eddie Jordan thinks of Elton Brand.. "I look at how you play in the game," Jordan said. "It's not all about stats; anybody can get stats and lose. There are a lot of good stat players on losing teams that when you put them on winning teams, they're not good players. Not to say I'm talking about our guys." Eddie Jordan's Translation: Basically you were here before I was. I view your whole career as a hoax. You were a great stat player for the lottery Chicago Bulls. You were traded to the Clippers and only had one decent year as a "Winner". Its not my responsiblity to give you the minutes you want if you dont fit into the scheme of the team. You are Ed's problem not mine. I'll play who I want and if you can help the team win you will get minutes.

Nothing but the truth
A bad problem is when you don't have any talent in which to get better. A good problem is when you have so many weapons that you have to find a way to get everyone involved. The Sixers have a good problem in that they can play any particular way be it fast break, half-court or even a good ol' fashioned shootout. Brand in the low post is automatic but I think the coach is trying to see others ways that they can play in case something were to happen to Brand and to save his legs for the playoffs. When they make the playoffs opposing team will see a heavy dose of Brand the same way teams got a heavy dose of Shaq back in the early part of the decade. I would like to see Thad play better but he has to fill that "Carlos Boozer" role on this dream team. Speights has Moses Malone written all over him but it's hard backing up a phenomenal beast such as Brand and the veteran savy Dalambert. This team is just so deep it's like watching the 92 Olympic team.
