James in no hurry

LeBron James, the NBA's MVP, said he has no timetable for deciding what he will do next summer.

The Cleveland all-star can opt for free agency on July 1, but he said yesterday he isn't concerned with that now because he believes the Cavaliers have a chance to contend for the championship this season.

Martin sidelined

Kevin Martin, the Sacramento Kings' leading scorer with 30.6 points a game, will be sidelined for about two months after deciding to undergo surgery on his injured left wrist.

The team said that Martin will have the operation Monday and is expected to miss at least eight weeks. He has a hairline fracture of the navicular bone.

Beno Udrih is expected to start in his place tonight in Utah.

Thomas breaks arm

Chicago Bulls forward Tyrus Thomas suffered a broken left forearm during a weight-training session yesterday and will have surgery today. He could miss four to six weeks.

In four games this season, the fourth-year player from Louisiana State is averaging eight points and five rebounds in 21 minutes.

With Thomas out, rookie Taj Gibson is expected to start.

Hornets owner ailing

New Orleans Hornets owner George Shinn said he has prostate cancer but is optimistic that he will conquer the disease.

A businessman from Kannapolis, N.C., Shinn, 68, has been the owner of the team since he received an expansion franchise in Charlotte, N.C., in 1988.

He moved the team to New Orleans in 2002, and worked with the NBA to give the team a temporary home in Oklahoma City for the 2005-06 season after floods from Hurricane Katrina damaged the New Orleans Arena.
