Flyers lose defenseman Jones to Kings

The Flyers tried to push defenseman Randy Jones through reentry waivers, but one of his former coaches wouldn't let it happen.

Jones, 28, was claimed yesterday by the Los Angeles Kings, whose head coach, Terry Murray, was a Flyers assistant in charge of the defense when Jones was part of the team.

The Kings and Flyers will share Jones' $2.75 million cap hit - $1.375 million apiece.

Jones spent parts of five seasons with the Flyers and is in the final year of a two-year, $5.5 million deal.

"He certainly would have helped us," Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. "That's the risk you take, and what are you going to do?"

Holmgren said the Flyers had talked to a few other teams to get a feel for their interest in Jones. Obviously, the Kings weren't one of them.

If Jones had cleared waivers, coach John Stevens planned to put him in the lineup tomorrow against Carolina.

The Flyers had originally waived Jones and sent him to the AHL Adirondack Phantoms to free cap space. They tried to bring Jones back when Simon Gagne was placed on the long-term injured reserve list with two hernias, opening $5.25 million of cap space.

Gagne was examined by a doctor in Montreal yesterday, but the Flyers said they would not have the results until today.

Peter DeLuca, the Flyers' orthopedic surgeon, has recommended surgery for the left winger, who is expected to miss at least a month.

When Gagne returns, the Flyers will have only about $800,000 of cap space - unless they send one of their extra players to the Phantoms.

Betts ready. Fourth-line center Blair Betts, one of the Flyers' top penalty killers, skated, absorbed contact, and took face-offs yesterday, and pronounced his dislocated right shoulder fit.

After missing seven games, he figures to return to the lineup tomorrow against Carolina. Betts will be on a line with wingers Dan Carcillo and Ian Laperriere.

Betts said he wasn't concerned about reinjuring the shoulder, but noted, "You try to simulate things as much as you can. It's kind of tough to do in practice, but we'll never know how it's going to react until I'm hit . . . and out there playing a game."

Parent returning. Ryan Parent, who has missed the last four games with a groin injury, is expected to return tomorrow and will probably be paired with Kimmo Timonen.

Timonen (minus-10) and Braydon Coburn (minus-9) have struggled as a duo, causing Stevens to place Timonen and Parent together at yesterday's practice.

Timonen and Parent worked well as a unit last season.

Stevens said Coburn and Timonen will see time together on the power play.

Discounted tickets. Fans who show any Phillies ticket stubs will able to purchase $25 Flyers tickets (half the normal price) to tomorrow's 1 p.m. game against Carolina or Monday's 5 p.m. game against Tampa Bay.

Tickets are based on availability and can be purchased at the Wachovia Center box office.

Busy dad. Matt Carle's dad, Bob, traveled from Anchorage, Alaska, to be with his son during the father-son trip to Washington this week. After returning to Philadelphia, Bob Carle continued on to the University of Denver to visit with son David, who is a student-coach for the school's hockey team.

David Carle can't play hockey because of a heart condition.

Coaching "makes him feel like he's still part of the team," said Matt Carle, who leads the Flyers with a plus-7 rating.

Though he wasn't invited to Team USA's training camp, Matt Carle is candidate to earn a spot on the squad.

Breakaways. Mika Pyorala, Arron Asham, and Darroll Powe practiced on the third line. . . . In nine games, Ray Emery has a 2.62 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage; Marty Biron, the Flyers' No. 1 goalie last year, has a 3.44 GAA and .891 save percentage in six games with the Islanders.

Good for Randy, he wasn't that bad when he was coached by Terry Murray, but under Stevens and Jack McIlhargey, both he and Corburn took major steps backwards. He might become serviceable again working under a real coach.

I'm sorry that Randy Jones' cap hit remains with the Flyers, but if he's good enough to play in the NHL, then the Flyers needed to try to bring him up. You can't just manage in fear. Simon Gagne's going to be out for a few months; the Flyers could still waive Riley Cote; someone else might get hurt. It's a long season, and to be honest, Randy Jones' cap hit isn't what you want to have, but it's not something that can't be managed. What you can't do is leave a guy in the minors, if you think he can help you win games -- come on, people! The Flyers were attempting to strengthen their team. The rules are what they are, Jones goes to L.A. Now we figure out another move.

Maybe I'm missing something, but is this Flyers' team any better or as good as last year's? I know it's a really long (much too long) season, and teams go through highs and lows, but it's hard to see this team as much better than a slightly better than NHL average team with little hope for a Cup this season. That's not to rule it out, just to say the beginning of the year has not gotten me very excited. But, there's lots of time left to get things worked out and on track. Ten games down the line we may be sky high about the Fly-guys, who knows?

Managed my ____. The Jones option was lost for this year when he went down. Last year at inflated cost is not so bad. We are carrying Cote contract and Van will be shuffled between lines as his performance waivers. Let him play one line in AHL. We have bigger issues with discipline and focus. "Hard practice"? As opposed to what?

Can someone tell me why they made Stevens head coach over Terry Murray in the first place.....now hes in L.A. (8-4-2) with a bunch of young talent and look what that team is doing. Even Hitch has more points with that bunch nobodys (except Nash) than the Flyers.

It was poor management by Holmgren. Gagne will be back in the spring most likely (at least until his next injury. He's become brittle), and the team will be boxed in at that point, including at the trade deadline. And how much was Jones going to play on the third pairing, which hasn't been the problem anyway? Beyond, that, I think Stevens, for the first time, is really on thin ice. I'd bet that if by the 20th game, the Flyers are not well above .500, he will be gone. Hard for the Flyers to ignore what happened to the Pens last year after they changed coaches...

If we cannot win w/o Randy Jones, we have bigggggg issues. Jones is a stiff. Maybe if Gagne is out for the season we can use his cap space to sign some decent players.

Stupid, stupid, stupid. Now we're really up against the cap with no wiggle room. The one thing this team couldn't afford to squander is cap space, and somehow Holmgren found a way to do just that...in the most obvious way possible (of COURSE someone would take Randy Jones at half price).

OK, it sucks about the cap hit, but at least our management is trying to do something to win games. Sending down Jones was the right call at the time it was made...after their season last year, who would have predicted that Coburn and Timmonen would have struggled so much this season? In the offseason, everyone was calling for Jones's head and to bring up Syvret, who has looked far from good in his limited time on ice. Now, of course, everyone talks about how stupid Holmgren is. You can't have it both ways folks.

Please children, can we please learn a few things. First, whether you like him or not, his name is Braydon Coburn, not Colburn, Corburn or any other misspelling that comes across in these posts. OKT has actually looked quite good in the 5/6 role, its Syvret that has not brought much to the table. As far as the comment above regarding Hitch and the Blue Jackets, you say all they have is Nash ? Again, learn before you type. Columbus sports the likes of RJ Umberger, Kristian Huselius, Antoine Vermette, Sammy Pahlsson, Jason Chimera, Raffi Torres, Fedor Tyutin, Jan Hejda and a very tough Steve Mason in net. The Blue Jackets are a very solid team that plays with more heart, emotion and grit, more than likely due to better coaching.

Flyers are in trouble if Carter doesn't make up his mind to carry the team like Priemau did....time to grow up boys and get serious about your job.

The Flyers worry about Randy Jones? No. The Flyers need to worry about earning enough points to make the playoffs. And if Stevens is kept as coach, then I guess we have to wait and see if the Flyers can go on a streak in March to get the 4 seed or struggle to make the 5-8 spots which will go down to the last week of the season. It's Groundhog Day.
