Flyers lose defenseman Jones to Kings
The Flyers tried to push defenseman Randy Jones through reentry waivers, but one of his former coaches wouldn't let it happen.
Jones, 28, was claimed yesterday by the Los Angeles Kings, whose head coach, Terry Murray, was a Flyers assistant in charge of the defense when Jones was part of the team.
The Kings and Flyers will share Jones' $2.75 million cap hit - $1.375 million apiece.
Jones spent parts of five seasons with the Flyers and is in the final year of a two-year, $5.5 million deal.
"He certainly would have helped us," Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. "That's the risk you take, and what are you going to do?"
Holmgren said the Flyers had talked to a few other teams to get a feel for their interest in Jones. Obviously, the Kings weren't one of them.
If Jones had cleared waivers, coach John Stevens planned to put him in the lineup tomorrow against Carolina.
The Flyers had originally waived Jones and sent him to the AHL Adirondack Phantoms to free cap space. They tried to bring Jones back when Simon Gagne was placed on the long-term injured reserve list with two hernias, opening $5.25 million of cap space.
Gagne was examined by a doctor in Montreal yesterday, but the Flyers said they would not have the results until today.
Peter DeLuca, the Flyers' orthopedic surgeon, has recommended surgery for the left winger, who is expected to miss at least a month.
When Gagne returns, the Flyers will have only about $800,000 of cap space - unless they send one of their extra players to the Phantoms.
Betts ready. Fourth-line center Blair Betts, one of the Flyers' top penalty killers, skated, absorbed contact, and took face-offs yesterday, and pronounced his dislocated right shoulder fit.
After missing seven games, he figures to return to the lineup tomorrow against Carolina. Betts will be on a line with wingers Dan Carcillo and Ian Laperriere.
Betts said he wasn't concerned about reinjuring the shoulder, but noted, "You try to simulate things as much as you can. It's kind of tough to do in practice, but we'll never know how it's going to react until I'm hit . . . and out there playing a game."
Parent returning. Ryan Parent, who has missed the last four games with a groin injury, is expected to return tomorrow and will probably be paired with Kimmo Timonen.
Timonen (minus-10) and Braydon Coburn (minus-9) have struggled as a duo, causing Stevens to place Timonen and Parent together at yesterday's practice.
Timonen and Parent worked well as a unit last season.
Stevens said Coburn and Timonen will see time together on the power play.
Discounted tickets. Fans who show any Phillies ticket stubs will able to purchase $25 Flyers tickets (half the normal price) to tomorrow's 1 p.m. game against Carolina or Monday's 5 p.m. game against Tampa Bay.
Tickets are based on availability and can be purchased at the Wachovia Center box office.
Busy dad. Matt Carle's dad, Bob, traveled from Anchorage, Alaska, to be with his son during the father-son trip to Washington this week. After returning to Philadelphia, Bob Carle continued on to the University of Denver to visit with son David, who is a student-coach for the school's hockey team.
David Carle can't play hockey because of a heart condition.
Coaching "makes him feel like he's still part of the team," said Matt Carle, who leads the Flyers with a plus-7 rating.
Though he wasn't invited to Team USA's training camp, Matt Carle is candidate to earn a spot on the squad.
Breakaways. Mika Pyorala, Arron Asham, and Darroll Powe practiced on the third line. . . . In nine games, Ray Emery has a 2.62 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage; Marty Biron, the Flyers' No. 1 goalie last year, has a 3.44 GAA and .891 save percentage in six games with the Islanders.
