Penn to start fourth-stringer at quarterback

Penn will start fourth-string quarterback John Hurley against Bucknell on Saturday at Franklin Field.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound sophomore doesn't have any game experience but will start because of injuries to starting quarterback Keiffer Garton and backups Kyle Olson and Billy Ragone.

Garton suffered an elbow injury in the 14-3 season-opening loss to Villanova, although he played the following week. The junior will miss his second game.

Olson suffered a sprained anterior cruciate joint in last weekend's 30-24 victory over Dartmouth. Ragone, who had been alternating at quarterback with Olson, broke his collarbone on the ensuing play. The freshman, the Ivy League's rookie of the week, will miss the rest of the season. Olson, however, could see some action against Bucknell.

Garton should return for the Quakers' Oct. 17 game at Columbia.

"It's been crazy the last two or three years," Penn coach Al Bagnoli said of his team's rash of injuries. "This year has probably been as crazy as it's ever been. So, go figure."

Penn takes a 1-2 record into Saturday's game. Bucknell is 3-2.
