Stewart sends Busch to wall en route to victory at Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Tony Stewart usually takes every win any way he can. After wrecking Kyle Busch on the last lap at Daytona International Speedway, he didn't much feel like celebrating.

Busch passed Stewart right before the final lap to take the lead last night, but Stewart chased him down and calculated his next move. He closed in on Busch's bumper, and slight contact sent Busch drifting up the track.

Busch slid back down to maintain his lead, then tried to slide in front of Stewart to block Stewart's next move. The cars were too close together and Stewart hooked Busch's right corner to send Busch sailing into the wall.

It triggered a multiple crash behind them, but Stewart sailed through for his second points win of the season in capturing the Coke Zero 400.

"That's not the way I wanted to do it," said Stewart, who won the summer Daytona race for the third time in five years.

It was a violent wreck for Busch, who climbed from his car apparently unscathed but had to be forced by four NASCAR officials into a waiting safety vehicle. He finished 14th and refused to comment after the race.

Earlier in the day, an overheated Busch received intravenous fluids after his driving stint in the Grand-Am race, then retreated to his motor home to rest before the 400-mile Sprint Cup event.

Busch drove 70 minutes in his sports-car series debut. He split the Chip Ganassi-owned ride with fellow NASCAR driver Scott Speed.

Jeremy Mayfield was not at Daytona International Speedway, citing the media attention on his legal fight with NASCAR as an unnecessary distraction from the Independence Day celebration.

NASCAR suspended Mayfield May 9 for testing positive for methamphetamines, and he sued to be reinstated. A federal judge on Wednesday issued an injunction that cleared him to return to competition, and Mayfield indicated he would travel to Daytona.

But he didn't enter his Mayfield Motorsports team.

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. - A week after spinning out in Richmond, Va., and losing the IndyCar Series points lead, Ryan Briscoe won his second consecutive pole at Watkins Glen International for today's Camping World Grand Prix. He turned a lap in 1 minute, 28.5970 seconds around the 11-curve, 3.4-mile road course in the Firestone Fast Six Shootout.
