Host Woods shares lead with Kim
BETHESDA, Md. - Tournament host Tiger Woods and defending champion Anthony Kim set the stage yesterday for a showdown in the AT&T National at Congressional Country Club.
Woods salvaged an even-par 70 from a roller-coaster round, losing a 3-shot lead in two holes and having to scramble down the stretch to regain a share of the lead at 10-under-par 200.
Kim turned birdie into bogey with an ugly three-putt on No. 9, but kept his cool in warm, blustery conditions for a 2-under 68. The 24-year-old has never finished higher than Woods in a PGA Tour event, and this will be the first time they have been paired in any tournament.
"I'm excited to be there," Kim said. "There's not too many chances to play against the best in the world at his tournament."
Woods' tournament will be played at Aronimink in Newtown Square the next two years while Congressional prepares to host the 2011 U.S. Open.
Woods has a 44-3 record on the PGA Tour when he has at least a share of the 54-hole lead, although it took work to get there. He started with a 1-shot lead over Rod Pampling, an advantage that was gone after one hole when Woods drove into the gallery and couldn't reach the green out of the thick rough.
He recovered with a 25-foot eagle on the par-5 ninth for a 3-shot lead, but going from bunker to bunker near the green and missing a seven-foot putt gave him a double bogey at No. 11 and a tie for the lead.
"It was a tough day," Woods said. "One of those things you just had to grind it out and get through it."
Michael Allen, who turned 50 in January, was at 9-under 201 with Cameron Beckman, who chipped in for eagle on the par-5 16th for a 66.
A dozen players were separated by 4 shots going into the final round, including West Chester native Jim Furyk (69) and Pampling (71) at 8-under 202, and U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover (68) another shot behind.
West Chester resident Sean O'Hair was 9 strokes behind after shooting a 68 yesterday.
LPGA Tour
SYLVANIA, Ohio - Eunjung Yi shot a 10-under 61 to take a 4-stroke lead after the third round of the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic.
The 21-year-old South Korean, seeking her first LPGA Tour victory, had an eagle and eight birdies to reach 18-under 195 at Highland Meadows.
Morgan Pressel (67) and Song-Hee Kim (64) were tied for second. Top-ranked Lorena Ochoa was 11 under after a 67.
European Tour
SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France - Rafa Echenique of Argentina shot a 1-under 70 to take a 1-stroke lead over Martin Kaymer of Germany in the French Open.
Echenique, coming off a second-place finish last week in Munich, had an 11-under 202 total on Le Golf National's Albatross Course. Kaymer shot a 69.
