When the United Football League makes its debut in October, Michael Vick could be one of its players.

Michael Huyghue, the commissioner of the four-team league, said the UFL was willing to give Vick a place to play - provided there were no pending legal issues. His rights belong to Orlando.

Vick has served an 18-month sentence in federal prison for his involvement in a dogfighting ring. He is under home confinement until July 20, after which the NFL is expected to announce whether the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback will be suspended.

The UFL will have teams in Orlando, New York, Las Vegas, and San Francisco, playing games mostly on Thursday nights in October and November.

Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher, the New York Giants' Tom Coughlin, the Baltimore Ravens' John Harbaugh, former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher, and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden are taking part in the first NFL-USO coaches tour of Iraq over the Fourth of July weekend.

Tennis

Anna Kournikova is out for the season with a wrist injury for the St. Louis Aces, thus missing Monday's match against the Freedoms at the King of Prussia Mall. However, she will participate in a children's clinic at 5:30 p.m. and sign autographs afterward.

Colleges

Notre Dame basketball coach Mike Brey promoted Martin Ingelsby of Bryn Mawr to assistant coach, filling the vacancy created when nine-year associate head coach Sean Kearney was hired as head coach at Holy Cross.

Ingelsby played for the Irish (1997-2001) and has been their coordinator of men's basketball operations.

Temple's football team received an oral commitment for 2010 from Connor Reilly, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound quarterback from W.T. Woodson High in Fairfax, Va. He was being recruited by Virginia and Virginia Tech.

Former Hawaii quarterback Timmy Chang, 27, the NCAA career leader in passing yards, was arrested Thursday at his Mililani home on suspicion of robbery and released without charges pending further investigation. He is accused of taking a camera from a woman who was filming a brawl last month.

He last played in the Canadian Football League and was released by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in February.

WNBA

Phoenix Mercury star Diana Taurasi, the leading fan vote-getter for the July 25 All-Star Game, was charged with drunken driving Thursday in Phoenix a few hours after the former Connecticut star helped her team defeat the Seattle Storm.

Candace Parker will make her season debut for the Los Angeles Sparks tomorrow night. The former Tennessee star gave birth to her first child, a daughter, on May 13.
