National League Notes

New cleanup man settles in

Minutes after walking into the St. Louis Cardinals' clubhouse yesterday, Mark DeRosa was getting tips from slugger Albert Pujols.

DeRosa, the former Penn quarterback, had just arrived after being traded from Cleveland and was getting reacclimated after half a season in the American League.

"I just want to be a piece to the puzzle," DeRosa said. "I'm excited to be here and to be back in the National League and be a part of a division race that I have a lot of familiarity with."

St Louis is in a virtual tie with Milwaukee for the NL Central lead despite a void at third base, with Troy Glaus still rehabbing from January shoulder surgery and no return imminent. DeRosa had been a key player for the Chicago Cubs in 2007 and '08.

He cost the Cardinals Chris Perez, who is expected to join the Indians' bullpen today, plus a player to be named.

Aside from Pujols, who led the majors with 28 homers and 74 RBIs before yesterday's games, the Cardinals' offense has struggled. Their cleanup hitters had been batting .220, worst in the NL, with 13 homers and 48 RBIs.

Whatever Pujols may have said didn't take root immediately, though, as DeRosa went 0 for 3 and the Cards lost to the Twins, 6-2.

Maybe he could try playing checkers

Bronson Arroyo said he is considering having carpal-tunnel surgery on his aching right wrist after the season.

"I'm worried about it all the time," said the Cincinnati righthander, who has had soreness since 2004 and has been forced to give up his favorite hobby of playing the guitar. "It's gotten to the point where it's sore whenever I do anything."

That Pete Townshend "windmill move" probably wasn't the best thing for a bad right arm.

Noteworthy

The California Highway Patrol said Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Ronald Belisario was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol early Saturday in Pasadena. Officers observed him talking on his cell phone, then suspected Belisario had been drinking and placed him under arrest. He was taken to the Pasadena Police Department and later released on unspecified bail. . . . The Subway Series has become more like a subway crash - in their last four meetings with the Yankees, the Mets have been outscored by 33-3. . . . Washington activated pitcher Scott Olsen from the 15-day disabled list and optioned righthander Shairon Martis to triple-A Syracuse. . . . The Pittsburgh Pirates finished 8-7 in interleague play, matching their best record of 2001.
