Phillies Notes: Hamels regrets his outburst

TORONTO - Cole Hamels was too upset to answer questions after Friday's ugly loss to the Blue Jays, but the Phillies lefthander expressed regret yesterday about his behavior toward home-plate umpire Mark Carlson.

Hamels, who allowed four runs in 42/3 innings, was ejected when he barked at Carlson after manager Charlie Manuel removed him from the game.

"That was just me taking it all out on him, and I shouldn't have done that," Hamels said. "I was desperate for something good to happen. . . . Everything exploded in me, and I wasn't able to control myself."

After Carlson called a two-strike change-up to Kevin Millar a ball, Millar reached base on an infield single. Hamels immediately voiced his disagreement with the call, and later continued to argue with Carlson, resulting in the ejection.

Hamels said yesterday that he lost his concentration earlier in the inning due to frustration. Preparing to deliver a pitch to Adam Lind, he was about to begin his delivery with a full windup, then realized he should be pitching from the stretch. He then angrily paced behind the mound, yelling into his glove.

"It was just the frustration of knowing that we weren't playing well, and knowing that you want to be able to be the guy that people can count on," he said.

Bastardo will miss start

Antonio Bastardo, who has a left-shoulder strain, will miss his scheduled start Wednesday, the Phillies confirmed yesterday.

Because Bastardo is scheduled to meet with team physician Michael Ciccotti in Philadelphia tomorrow, a Wednesday start in Atlanta appeared unlikely. The team will know more about Bastardo's health after the examination.

Hamels will pitch Wednesday, and the team likely will recall righthander Carlos Carrasco from triple-A Lehigh Valley to start Thursday in Atlanta.

Park OK

Chan Ho Park appeared to be in significant pain when he collapsed to the ground after a ground ball bounced off his right knee in the fifth inning Friday. But the injury was termed a bruise, and Park said yesterday that he could pitch.

"I'm OK," he said. "It hit me on the knee, and it hurt, but I'm fine."
