Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon
What: The fifth annual Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon presented by Suzuki. More than 4,000 athletes will swim, bike and run through Fairmount Park today and tomorrow in separate triathlon events.
The first day of racing is today when 1,500 athletes will compete in the Sprint distance triathlon - 0.9-kilometer swim, 24-kilometer bike ride and 5-kilometer run - and 100 children will take part in the Kids Fun Run and Kids Duathlon.
The main event takes place tomorrow when 2,500 professional athletes and age-groupers compete in the Olympic distance race - 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-kilometer bike ride and 10-kilometer run. There is a $13,500 prize purse for this event.
When: Today, starting at 8 a.m., and tomorrow, starting at 6:55 a.m.
Today: The start/finish line is at Martin Luther King Drive and Black Road. The awards ceremony begins at 11:30 a.m. The Kids Duathlons and Kids Fun Runs are set for 12:30 to 2 p.m.
Tomorrow: The event starts at the St. Joseph's University Boathouse on Kelly Drive and ends at Martin Luther King Drive and Black Road. The award ceremony begins at 11:30 a.m.
Parking: Parking for both days will be on the roads around the Please Touch Museum (Memorial Hall) in West Fairmount Park. From there, walk down Black Road to the transition/finish line area.
Benefits: The Cancer Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is the charitable beneficiary of the Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon.
