Seneca hurler gets Burlington County into semis
Kevin Comer's accomplishments as a sophomore at Seneca High School have carried over into the Carpenter Cup.
The 6-foot-3, 195-pound righthander allowed one run in three innings and earned the win as Burlington County defeated Jersey Shore, 10-5, in a Carpenter Cup quarterfinal yesterday at the University of Pennsylvania's Meiklejohn Stadium.
Burlington County will face the Suburban One League American/Continental in today's 10 a.m. semifinal of the 16-team, single-elimination tournament at Citizens Bank Park. The Philadelphia Catholic League is scheduled to play the Suburban One National/Bicentennial team in the 2 p.m. semifinal.
In two Carpenter Cup games spanning five innings, Comer has allowed one run on four hits. During his high school season, he earned Inquirer second-team all-South Jersey honors after going 4-0 with a 1.87 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 33 2/3 innings pitched.
"It's so exciting that we have advanced to Citizens Bank Park," Comer said. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience."
If Comer plans on pitching in the Phillies' ballpark, he has to hope his team wins today. That's because Shawnee head coach Brian Anderson, who is guiding the Burlington County team, said both Comer and Maple Shade righthander Christian Rahman won't pitch today. Rahman also threw three innings yesterday, allowing two runs.
If Burlington County reaches tomorrow's final, it's likely Comer could reappear.
Had the game not been rained out twice, it's likely Comer wouldn't have pitched yesterday. He attended a workout on Sunday at Waterfront Park, home of the Trenton Thunder, that was organized by the New York Yankees.
Comer said he threw fewer than 15 pitches so he was ready to go yesterday. And so was the Burlington County offense. Cherokee High junior first baseman Eric Barbieri went 3 for 3 with an RBI, while his Chiefs teammate Shane Lynch had a key two-run single. Seneca shortstop Shaun Flynn was 2 for 3 with a run scored.
Since Burlington County could potentially have to play three days in a row, the team can add three more pitchers for today but must stay within the 25-man limit.
Comer will likely be one of the players to be replaced for a game.
Softball tournament postponed. Due to the recent heavy rain and the subsequent poor condition of the fields at FDR Park, yesterday's first games of the Carpenter Cup softball tournament and today's games were postponed. A new schedule is to be announced.
