Burnett's embarrassed
The New York Yankees signed righthander A.J. Burnett to a five-year, $82.5 million contract at least partly because he was known as a Red Sox killer.
He was 5-0 against Boston and 3-0 at Fenway Park, where he did not allow an earned run in two starts covering 132/3 innings with Toronto last season.
How things have changed. Burnett blew a 6-0 lead at Fenway on April 25, then lasted only eight outs in the Yanks' 7-0 loss at Boston on Tuesday.
"It's embarrassing," Burnett said after the Red Sox raised their record against the pinstripes to 6-0 this season.
Hey, hey
Apparently, nerves were frayed during Tuesday's White Sox-Tigers game. Either that, or something was lost in translation.
After grounding out, Chicago catcher A.J. Pierzynski, who has been involved in a scrum or two, said something to Detroit pitcher Dontrelle Willis as he jogged back to the dugout. Pierzynski was confronted by Tigers catcher Gerald Laird. The two engaged in a shouting match, and both benches and bullpens emptied.
No punches were thrown, but there was a humorous moment when White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle snapped off a few fake jabs at the Tigers' Placido Polanco.
In the end, Pierzynski said it was all a misunderstanding.
"I just say, 'Hey', to Dontrelle and he said, 'Hey.' " Pierzynski said in an MLB.com report. "Then the next thing I know the benches were empty. . . . I have no problem with Dontrelle. I have no problem with anybody on their team."
Said Willis, "Just a misunderstanding, but we're cool now. He's a competitor. He's a hard-nosed player."
Noteworthy
The Yankees' Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez confronted ESPN baseball commentator Rick Sutcliffe in the clubhouse before Tuesday's game at Fenway Park, according to the New York Daily News. Sutcliffe alleged that A-Rod is tipping the catcher's setup location to Teixeira from the on-deck circle.
