You Talkin' to Me?

Romero's back - now what?

From: Fitzpatrick, Frank

Subject: RE: talkin'

. . . Well, this is a special day here at Thursday Talkin'. Sort of like when the Phillies come down to Reading for an exhibition game or an astronaut returns to his vo-tech school for a mercy visit. We'd like to welcome Ashley back from her new role as the designated third wheel to whom Gonzo and Ford relegate one measly Talkin' entry a day. . . . Anyway, what's your take on J.C. Romero's return? Is all forgiven? Will he recapture his form quickly? Will he continue to shop at GNC? . . .

Is Ashley now the Ripken of Talkin'? Doesn't matter who's pitching, you're hitting? As for Romero, I can probably speak for everybody in town: I have no clue what to think about what he did. Was he brazen, ignorant, scapegoated? He wanted the supplements enough to go find them. So are we supposed to believe they didn't help him? Beats me. I do know how important he was the last two seasons. You notice how the Phillies welcomed him back by giving up four runs in the seventh inning of the last game of his suspension? (Didn't mean to switch to italics . . . I'm trying to switch back.)

Wow. What an introduction, Fitz. I gotta tell you, I feel like Mayberry, without the one-day trip to San Diego. At least I'm going back to the majors. Or at least I think I am. . . . So Romero's coming back. What, should we throw a party? Forgive me, but I'm not feeling all that sympathetic. He cheated. Doesn't matter to me his explanation or excuse.

His cheating is irrelevant now. He's done his penance and is now cleared for Communion. . . . If he returns to form, this team is scary good. . . . And if they get a decent starter and a righthanded bat off the bench, they might win 100 games. My only concern is that the eight regulars might wear down if they don't get more rest in the second half. . . .  Maybe they ought to look into some good vitamins, or some poorly labeled supplements. . . . Meanwhile, Jensen, who is to technology what Charlie Manuel is to grammar, is trying to figure out how to exit the italic mode.

If you're going to mock my technical inadequacies, I'm done here. (Hey, the italics are gone.)

Mike, Cohen might flip if you and Sheridan go on the DL.

. . . Be glad it's only your technical inadequacies we're mocking. . . .

I bring up inadequacies to an old guy and where does his mind go? Probably something to do with supplements. Was Fitz at the GNC with Romero? . . . Sheridan didn't go on the DL. He went straight to the Hall of Fame.

Finish up, you two . . .

I've got to tell you, Fitzy, you are a much more efficient Talkin' moderator than John. And more intelligent. But that's probably not much of a compliment.

. . . Just because someone went to La Salle and likes Ultimate Fighting and the Wing Bowl doesn't necessarily mean they're unintelligent. . . .
