Ted's fishing license swiped
A fishing license issued to Ted Williams in 1970, plus some personal notes on local fishing holes, were stolen during an auction preview last week in Swanzey, N.H.
Auctioneer John Pappas told the New Hampshire Sunday News the stolen items had drawn strong interest. Williams was an avid angler throughout his life.
The 1970 license for "Theodore Williams" was in a small holder attached to a fishing cap, Pappas said, and the notes were tucked inside. The items were taken from the Knotty Pine Auction Service last week.
Hook him
Manager Jim Leyland pulled Detroit starter Edwin Jackson in the eighth inning against Baltimore yesterday, even though the Tigers righthander was working on a two-hitter.
"A little bit of a tough spot in the eighth inning; he had to work a little harder," Leyland said. "That's why I took him out."
Jackson, who had thrown 101 pitches, struck out seven and walked just one. The Tigers won, 3-0.
Lester blows 'em away
Boston's Jon Lester (4-5) struck out 12 in an 8-2 win over Toronto. The dozen strikeouts were the most by a Red Sox pitcher this season and the most by a Boston lefthander since Bruce Hurst struck out 14 against Oakland on May 5, 1987.
P.S. The win was Terry Francona's 499th as Boston manager. Francona was 285-363 with the Phillies from 1997 through 2000.
Sorry to see June arrive
Even with yesterday's 5-4 loss to Oakland, the Texas Rangers finished May with a record of 20-9, the most wins in the month in club history. The Rangers, who had won seven of their previous nine, wound up one victory short of their most successful month ever, September 1978, when they went 21-10.
Noteworthy
Cleveland put all-star centerfielder Grady Sizemore on the 15-day disabled list with an inflamed left elbow and called up Chris Gimenez from triple-A Columbus. . . . Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton was out of the starting lineup against Oakland because of a recurring groin injury suffered May 17. . . . Catcher John Buck of Kansas City was still in a hospital a day after he hurt his lower back while preparing to bat against the Chicago White Sox. Buck was placed on the 15-day DL, and catcher Brayan Pena was recalled from triple-A Omaha.
