Roy won't coach Avs
Patrick Roy turned down an offer to coach the Colorado Avalanche, who had their worst finish since moving to Denver in 1995, the Denver Post reported yesterday.
The Hall of Fame goaltender phoned Avalanche president Pierre Lacroix late Tuesday to tell him he would not accept the team's offer, citing family reasons.
Roy met with Lacroix in Denver on May 7.
Coyotes on hold
A U.S. bankruptcy judge in Phoenix has accelerated the schedule for determining whether Canadian Jim Balsillie can buy the Phoenix Coyotes and move them to Ontario over the objection of the NHL.
Judge Redfield Baum set a hearing for June 9 and promised a ruling shortly thereafter.
Outdoors at Fenway
Boston Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs said he expected the NHL's third annual Winter Classic, played outdoors Jan. 1, to be at Fenway Park, although the league has not confirmed the game or an opponent.

Vancouver signed forward Rick Rypien, a cousin of former Eagles and Redskins quarterback Mark Rypien, to a two-year contract extension for undisclosed terms. . . . Montreal signed forward Mikael Johansson to a one-year contract. The 23-year-old center spent the last four seasons with Farjestads BK Karlstad of the Swedish Elite League.
