Eagles Notes

Dan Klecko fights for his position

Dan Klecko is the kind of guy who does what he's asked.

And yet, when the Eagles suggested the defensive tackle show up for this week's organized team activities, the words weren't exactly framed like a question.

"I don't know how much it is asking," Klecko said. "They told me to come out this week. I live right across the bridge [in New Jersey]. What else am I going to do?"

The NFL's collective-bargaining agreement allows for one mandatory minicamp in most situations. Teams hold other camps that are officially voluntary. But some veteran players - especially those less sure of making the team - show up, with or without suggestions from the team.

Klecko, 28, is one of those who always seems to be fighting for a roster spot, so he was at the NovaCare Complex yesterday.

After an on-again, off-again season at fullback, Klecko is back at his natural position of defensive tackle.

"Playing half the season at fullback last year I think they wanted to see me do some things at D-tackle," Klecko said. "Also just get used to moving again at D-tackle. I think it's a great idea."

In six NFL seasons, Klecko has played three positions - defensive tackle, fullback and linebacker. He prefers defensive tackle. Still, he's the type of player who has done whatever a coach has asked of him. That partly explains how the Temple product came to play for three Super Bowl champions (New England in 2004-05 and Indianapolis in 2007).

That doesn't mean Klecko isn't aware that his days on an NFL roster could be numbered. For inspiration, all he has to do is look at a photo of his wife, Loni, and his 8-month-old son, Nathan.

"I worry about it every day," Klecko said. "I look at a picture of my son and my wife, and I know I got to provide for them. . . . I'm a grown man now. I got to provide for people now. People look up to me. That's the mind-set I have to take into these things."

Three of the Eagles' options on kick returns worked on fielding kickoffs yesterday. Quentin Demps was the team's primary returner last season, although rookie receiver Jeremy Maclin and just-acquired cornerback Ellis Hobbs could spell the safety this fall. . . . After missing last week's practices because of sickness, rookie defensive back Macho Harris was back at work. . . . Three injured offensive linemen - Stacy Andrews (knee), Todd Herremans (knee) and Max Jean-Gilles (broken leg) - continued their rehabilitation during practice inside the Eagles' indoor facility. . . . Of the 83 players on the Eagles' current roster, 46 were at practice yesterday.
