Sports in Brief: Ohio State's Wells to enter NFL draft

Ohio State tailback Chris "Beanie" Wells said yesterday he planned to give up his final year of eligibility to enter the NFL draft.

Wells was considered a Heisman Trophy candidate before missing three games this season with a right foot injury, but the junior still managed to run for 1,197 yards. In three seasons at Ohio State, Wells ran for 3,382 yards, fourth best in school history. He is projected to be one of the first running backs selected.

Elsewhere: Wisconsin junior running back P.J. Hill will enter the NFL draft, ending his college career ranked third on the Badgers' all-time rushing list with 3,996 yards. . . . Texas Christian football coach Gary Patterson has agreed to a new contract that runs through the 2014 season. . . . Western Washington University, a Division II school in Bellingham, will drop football from its sports program because of costs. The school began playing football in 1903. . . . Philadelphia University center Jess Romano was named an honorable mention Division II player of the month by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.

Pro basketball

Hall of Fame coach Pete Carril, the 78-year-old former Princeton coach, rejoined the Sacramento Kings as a consultant.

Three days after waiving Fred Jones, the Los Angeles Clippers signed the free-agent guard to a 10-day contract.

Horse racing

Defending champion Tim Tetrick and four-time past champion Dave Palone were named co-winners of Harness Tracks of America's 2008 Driver of the Year Award.

Tetrick, a resident of Runnemede, led all drivers in North America in purses with a single-season record of $19.7 million.

Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown, Breeders' Cup Classic winner Raven's Pass, Dubai World Cup winner Curlin and the late filly Eight Belles are among the Eclipse Award finalists.

Delaware Park named horse racing industry veteran Pat Pope as racing secretary for the track's 72d meet.

Soccer

Defenders Cory Gibbs and Clarence Goodson were dropped from the U.S. roster for a Jan. 24 exhibition game against Sweden. The pair were replaced by Jason Hernandez of the San Jose Earthquakes and Ugo Ihemelu of the Colorado Rapids.

The Kixx signed defender Matthew Maher to a 15-day contract. Maher, who played at Middle Township High in Cape May County and Temple, joined his older brother, Anthony, on the roster.

Elsewhere: Columbus Crew defender Ezra Hendrickson retired, ending a 14-year career that included three MLS Cup titles.

Golf

Geoff Ogilvy opened the PGA Tour without making bogey on his way to a 6-under-par 67 and a 1-shot lead in the winners-only Mercedes-Benz Championship, on the Plantation course in Kapalua, Hawaii.

Sweden's Steven Jeppesen and South Africa's Trevor Fisher Jr. shot 8-under 63s to share the first-round lead in the Joburg Open at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club's West Course in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The Philadelphia Force of the National Pro Fastpitch Softball League sent their fourth-round pick in 2009 to the Akron Racers for outfielder Kellie Middleton.
