Phillies invite nine non-roster players to camp
Giles, who signed a minor-league contract Tuesday, will compete for a backup infielder's job; Majewski, a bullpen spot. The Phillies are looking for depth in both areas. Second baseman Chase Utley and third baseman Pedro Feliz are recovering from off-season surgery. The bullpen has an opening as lefthander J.C. Romero serves a 50-game suspension at the start of the season for testing positive for a banned substance.
The list of invitees includes pitchers Antonio Bastardo and Yorman Bazardo, infielder Jason Donald, catchers Tuffy Gosewich and Paul Hoover, and outfielders Jason Ellison and Jeremy Slayden.
Bastardo and Donald will get much of the attention in camp.
Bastardo, a 23-year-old lefthander, may have pitched his way to the majors last season had he not suffered a shoulder strain at double-A Reading. He had a 2.95 ERA and 109 strikeouts in 972/3 innings in 19 starts at Reading and single-A Clearwater last season. Bastardo pitched well in the Dominican league this winter, going 2-0 with a 2.63 ERA in eight starts for Gigantes del Cibao.
Bastardo has been a starter since joining the organization in 2005, but some scouts believe he projects as a reliever - the 5-foot-11, 170-pound Bastardo has even been compared to Romero. Don't be surprised if Bastardo gets a look as the Phils evaluate possible replacements for Romero.
Donald, 24, is coming off a strong showing in double A last season. Baseball America rates him the fourth-best prospect in the system. With Utley and Feliz on the mend, Donald figures to get a serious look in camp.
Speaking of prospects, Baseball America has finalized its Phillies list for 2009. Outfielder Dominic Brown ranks first. Pitcher Carlos Carrasco, catcher Lou Marson, Donald and pitcher Kyle Drabek round out the top five.
In all, the Phils have invited 19 non-roster players to big-league camp. The rest of the invitees are pitchers Dave Borkowski, Blaine Neal, Justin Lehr and Mike Koplove; infielders Mike Cervenak, Ozzie Chavez, J.J. Furmaniak, Terry Tiffee and Andy Tracy; and outfielder Chris Walker.
Pitchers and catchers begin workouts Feb. 14 in Clearwater, Fla.
Notes. The Phillies have promoted Gene Schall from Northeast area scout to area supervisor. Eric Valent, who had been a coach for Williamsport in the New York-Penn League, will fill Schall's spot on the area scouting staff. Schall and Valent are former Phillies players.
The lineup for the Phils' Jan. 22 winter-tour stop in Reading has been announced. Relief pitchers Ryan Madson and Scott Eyre will join manager Charlie Manuel, assistant general managers Chuck Lamar and Scott Proefrock, director of minor-league operations Steve Noworyta, and emcee Harry Kalas. The sold-out event will be held at the Reading Crowne Hotel.
