Sixers keeping Young, Smith
In an expected move, general manager Ed Stefanski said yesterday that the 76ers would exercise the third-year options on the contracts of Thaddeus Young and Jason Smith.
Young, the Sixers' starting small forward, averaged 8.2 points and 4.2 rebounds as a rookie last season.
Smith suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in the summer. He will miss this season after having had the knee surgically repaired. The forward averaged 4.5 points and 3.0 rebounds last season, also as a rookie.
Young and Smith were first-round selections in the 2007 draft. The Sixers chose Young with the 12th overall pick; Smith was selected by Miami at 20th overall.
The Sixers acquired Smith for guard Daequan Cook (their pick at 21st overall), a second-round selection in 2009, and cash.
