Franchitti returning to IndyCar
Franchitti won the 2007 IndyCar Series title and the Indianapolis 500 but left open wheel for NASCAR at the end of the season to drive Ganassi's No. 40 Dodge in the Sprint Cup Series.
Colleges
Keon Lawrence of Newark, N.J., has transferred from Missouri to play at Seton Hall.Lawrence, who led Missouri last season with a 29.2-point average, can practice with the Pirates this season but cannot play in games until 2009-10. He will have two seasons of eligibility left.
Lawrence averaged 31.2 points as a senior at Newark's Weequahic High School.

Virginia Tech will return to the two-quarterback system it used last season, with Tyrod Taylor and Sean Glennon sharing the duties, coach Frank Beamer said.
The announcement came a week after Beamer had said that Glennon would be the starter while Taylor redshirted. That was before the Hokies lost their season opener to East Carolina, 27-22.
Elsewhere: La Salle promoted Harris Adler to assistant coach for men's basketball and named former player Sean Neal, a 2003 graduate, the team's video coordinator. . . . Minnesota extended the contract of women's basketball coach Pam Borton through the 2013-14 season.

The Maple Leafs traded veteran defenseman Bryan McCabe and a fourth-round draft pick to the Florida Panthers for defenseman Mike Van Ryn, ridding Toronto of its biggest contract.The 33-year-old McCabe recently became a scapegoat for fans who thought his performance dipped after he signed a five-year, $28.75 million contract before the 2005-06 season.

The Nashville Predators suspended forward Alexander Radulov, 22, indefinitely without pay for deciding to stick with his Russian KHL team rather than return to the NHL.
Golf
Tiger Woods said on his Web site that his wife Elin is expecting their second child in late winter.Woods has not played since his U.S. Open victory in June. Two weeks later, he had reconstructive surgery on his left knee that put him out for the year. Woods' first child, daughter Sam, was born the Monday after the 2007 U.S. Open.
Noteworthy
Olympic swimmer Eric Shanteau, in his first interview since last week's surgery to remove a cancerous testicle, said he suffered minimal complications. He is confident that he is cancer-free, though he will not know for sure until he goes back for a follow-up exam in a couple of weeks.If blood tests show traces of cancer might still remain, he would likely have to undergo additional treatment such as chemotherapy.
The 24-year-old swimmer from suburban Atlanta was diagnosed with testicular cancer in June, shortly before he was scheduled to head to Omaha, Neb., for the U.S. Olympic trials.

Jamaal Magloire, who has been with four teams over the last three seasons, signed with the Miami Heat and is likely to compete with Mark Blount for the starting center position.
Elsewhere: Former Phillie Aaron Fultz pitched a seven-inning shutout as the Somerset Patriots beat the Camden Riversharks, 6-0, to sweep an Atlantic League doubleheader in Bridgewater, N.J. The Patriots won the first game, 2-1.
