Arnold to be St. Joseph's assistant

Geoff Arnold, a former St. Joseph's guard who spent the last seven seasons as associate head basketball coach at Drexel, is expected to be named an assistant to Phil Martelli at St. Joe's, a university source said.

The announcement is expected to be made by the end of the week.

Arnold will replace Doug Overton, who left after two seasons to become an assistant coach of the New Jersey Nets.

Arnold served as an assistant at St. Joe's under John Griffin and Martelli before spending five seasons at Massachusetts, including the last two as associate head coach under Bruiser Flint, who then brought him to Drexel. Flint and Arnold were teammates for three seasons at St. Joe's.

Arnold will be returning to familiar surroundings. He was a tri-captain for the Hawks in the 1985-86 season, when they won 26 games, then a school record, and the Atlantic Ten Conference championship. He was inducted into St. Joe's Hall of Fame in 1992.

Arnold ranks 11th all-time at St. Joe's with 346 assists. He is regarded as a strong recruiter and developer of backcourt players.
